Description
What type of wine it is
Eruzione 1614 Carricante by Planeta is a still organic white wine, an authentic expression of the Sicilian territory. It is born from a harmonious blend of Carricante and Riesling grapes, interpreting a dry, fresh and medium-to-full-bodied style. The olfactory profile offers intense scents of white flowers, green apple and lemon zest, enriched by nuances of wild honey and light mentholated hints. A distinct mineral character emerges on the palate, balancing smoothness and tension, prolonging the sip into an intensely savoury finish, ideal for pairing with shellfish and seafood crudité.
Where it comes from
The grapes come from the Etna territories, between the Feudo di Mezzo estate and the Sciara Nuova cru, on the northern slopes of the volcano. The vineyards are cultivated at altitudes exceeding eight hundred metres, immersed in a landscape of woods and ancient lava flows. The roots delve into a deep black volcanic soil, rich in sand and minerals, characterised by a marked stoniness. This mountain terroir shapes the character of the wine, providing remarkable freshness and a distinct savouriness, while the name recalls the historic 1614 eruption, which stopped right at the edge of these vineyards.
How it is produced
The harvest is carried out manually in October, with rapid cooling of the bunches to preserve their integrity. The selected grapes undergo light crushing and destemming followed by soft pressing. The decanted must undergoes fermentation in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks. The process is completed with careful ageing on the fine lees accompanied by regular stirring, an essential technique that enhances the palate structure and the natural drinkability of the wine, while keeping the delicate varietal aromas intact.
History and interesting facts
The name evokes the legendary eruption of Mount Etna in 1614, which lasted ten years and ended right at the edge of the Sciaranuova vineyard. Here, in Castiglione di Sicilia, Planeta grows Carricante grapes and a touch of Riesling using organic methods, with roots delving into black volcanic soils. This gives rise to a fascinating Sicilia DOC, SOStain® certified for sustainable viticulture. Highly acclaimed by international critics, with 94 Vinous points and 92 Robert Parker points awarded to the previous vintage, this vibrant white captures the most authentic essence of the volcano.
