Description

What type of wine it is

Planeta's Cometa is an organic white wine with a still and dry character, made from Fiano grapes. Recognised under the Menfi Denominazione di Origine Controllata, this wine represents a benchmark for Sicilian oenology, offering a profile also suitable for those following a vegan diet. The style is distinguished by its remarkable structural breadth, balanced by a lively mineral tension and a pronounced savouriness. The gustatory balance arises from a vinification process that masterfully combines the use of steel with a period in barrels, offering the palate an elegant and persistent sip.

Where it comes from

The grapes come from the territories of Menfi, in south-western Sicily, between the Dispensa and Gurra districts. The vineyards grow caressed by an ideal Mediterranean climate that encourages the perfect ripening of the clusters. The roots delve into clay and limestone soils located between 35 and 75 metres above sea level, with slight variations between the two areas that enrich the final complexity. This combination acts as a natural amplifier, enhancing the aromatic markers of the territory and giving the wine that energy and savouriness that make it unmistakable.

How it is produced

After the harvest, the grapes are gently pressed to extract the must. Fermentation takes place predominantly in steel with a small portion in barrels, in order to provide body without masking the identity of the fruit. The subsequent ageing on the fine lees, accompanied by weekly stirring, enriches the structure with a refined tactile silkiness. The final blend is then prepared for bottling.

History and interesting facts

The Planeta winery has transformed an ambitious experiment with 100% Fiano into an authentic organic masterpiece. Born in Menfi with the aim of competing with the world's finest white wines, Cometa is today an icon of Southern Italy that combines the ancient Campanian origins of the grape variety with the rigorous environmental respect of the SOStain® protocol.
