Description
What kind of wine it is
Barolo Cannubi by Chiara Boschis is an organic wine made from Nebbiolo grapes. In the glass, it displays a clear garnet colour, offering a bouquet of morello cherry, black cherry and delicate floral notes, intertwined with balsamic hints of mint. On the palate, it reveals a vertical attack, showing warmth, power and structure. The vibrant freshness blends with firm yet smooth tannins, leading the sip towards a persistent finish. It is ideal for pairing with braised meats and truffle-based dishes.
Where it comes from
The distinctive character of this Piedmontese red originates in the Barolo terroir, on the renowned Cannubi hill. The vines benefit from a southern exposure and sink their roots into soils of Tortonian and Elvezian origin. The soil consists of the calcareous-sandy marls of Sant’Agata, characterised by a significant sand content. This geological matrix imparts harmony to the grapes, giving the wine an elegant structural finesse, a clear savouriness and a recognisable ferrous mineral note.
How it is produced
Vinification involves fermentation with the cap exposed in temperature-controlled steel tanks, with frequent pumping over and punching down to extract colour and structure. Maturation continues for at least two years in oak barrels, during which time the wine develops spicy nuances and notes of blond tobacco. A final refinement in bottle for about a year perfects its overall balance before release.
History and Curiosities
The prestigious Barolo Cannubi crafted by Chiara Boschis for E. Pira & Figli originates from the renowned Piedmontese hill, in the most celebrated vineyard of the denomination. The vines, facing south, thrive on calcareous-sandy marl, producing grapes of extraordinary harmony. This excellent organic wine matures for at least two years in oak barrels and is refined for about a year in the bottle. The 2021 vintage, presented in the traditional Albeisa bottle, stands out for its absolute elegance, having been awarded an impressive 98 points by James Suckling and Robert Parker.

Gigi Pira, legendary exponent of the old production school, created his wines by assembling the grapes from his own plots of Cannubi, San Lorenzo and Via Nuova. He claimed that, just as cows must graze in the best pastures to produce excellent milk, only the best vineyards must be chosen for the wine. But Pira's attachment to tradition did not stop here: he was in fact the last remaining winemaker to to carry out the crushing on foot and the production without the support of any technical means.
Since 1980, continuity has been guaranteed by Chiara Boschis and her parents Franco and Ida, already linked to the Pira family by deep friendship and mutual esteem and representing a historic family of Barolo producers since the 18th century, now in its 9th generation. After graduating, Chiara began to follow her full-time passion for wine and her world, becoming one of the first women to produce Barolo at the end of the 1980s.
Taking care of this "little big house" has brought a breath of fresh air to the cellar and in the style of production. Since 2010, Chiara has been joined by her brother Giorgio, who shares with her a great passion for working in the vineyard and in the cellar, also thanks to his thirty years of experience.
The work on the vines, strictly manual, is carried out with extreme care and respect for the environment, following the dictates of organic farming, for which the company is certified by the 2014 harvest. The production is very limited (about 40,000 bottles per year), coming from grapes produced directly. Read more
