Description
What kind of wine it is
Nervi Conterno Gattinara is a still red wine made entirely from Nebbiolo grapes. Its essence faithfully expresses the character of the Gattinara region, located in Upper Piedmont. In the glass, it reveals a pale ruby hue, a prelude to an elegant and layered aromatic profile. Notes of medicinal herbs, cherry, dried flowers and undergrowth emerge, enriched by hints of blood orange peel and a delicate touch of soot. On the palate, it is vibrant and intact, supported by polished and dense tannins that lead to a long finish, with pleasant balsamic and liquorice notes.
Where it comes from
The roots of this wine lie in Gattinara, in the heart of Upper Piedmont. It is produced in the oldest winery in the area, a region with a deep winemaking tradition. The natural environment provides ideal conditions for cultivating Nebbiolo, allowing the grapes to express great finesse. The geological identity of this area is precisely reflected in the glass, helping to define a style focused on freshness, integrity and a well-defined, persistent flavour profile.
How it is produced
The vinification process begins with fermentation in steel tanks at a controlled temperature, chosen to preserve the aromatic purity of the grape variety. The wine then rests for 36 months of ageing in barrels, gaining structural depth and allowing the tannic texture to evolve. This period in wood consolidates an intriguing olfactory profile, where notes of mugwort, gentian, lemon balm and mistletoe blend harmoniously. On the palate, it offers a full and fresh sip, standing out for its decisive progression that culminates in elegant hints of liquorice.

Founded in 1905 by Luigi Nervi, the winery has always been a benchmark for Nebbiolo production in Valsesia, also known as the greenest valley in Italy. The vineyards stretch across spectacular purple-hued slopes, due to the presence of quartz porphyry of volcanic origin, which gives the wines a distinct character compared to those from the Langhe or Roero regions.
One of the estate’s most iconic crus is Vigna Molsino, a natural amphitheater facing south, cradling the vines and allowing for slow, complete ripening. In this unique setting, the winery experienced a major turning point in 2018 with the arrival of Roberto Conterno—already renowned for his Barolo production at the Giacomo Conterno winery in Monforte d’Alba. With the acquisition of Nervi and its 27 hectares of vineyards, Conterno chose to invest in the potential of Nebbiolo from Upper Piedmont, helping to elevate the prestige of Gattinara DOCG on an international scale.
