Description
Type of wine
Contrada Volpare by Maugeri is a Sicilian white wine that embodies the essence of Etna Bianco Superiore. Made from Carricante grapes vinified in steel and oak barrels, it stands out for an elegant bouquet of yellow-fleshed fruit, citrus, broom and aromatic herbs. On the palate, it expresses an authentic volcanic character and a clear mineral tension, with a slender sip and a citron finish perfect for accompanying refined seafood dishes and light carpaccios.
Origin
The grapes come from the eastern slopes of Mount Etna, in the territory of Milo. The vineyards are located at seven hundred metres above sea level and are cultivated using the alberello (bush-vined) system on small terraces delimited by traditional dry-stone lava walls. The sandy volcanic soil, rich in minerals, gives the wine an unmistakable savouriness and great verticality. The agronomic management follows the principles of organic viticulture, respecting the natural balance of a unique and extreme landscape.
How it is produced
Processing begins in October with a manual harvest, followed by soft pressing. To maintain the integrity of the aromatic profile, the must undergoes a brief cryomaceration and cold clarification. Fermentation takes place mainly in steel tanks, while part of the mass matures in French oak barrels, adding complexity without overpowering the grape variety's character. The process concludes with ageing on the fine lees for eight months, an essential phase to provide structure, texture and absolute precision to the long finish.
History and Trivia
Born at an altitude of 700 metres on the eastern slopes of the volcano, this Etna Bianco Superiore embodies pure heroic viticulture. In Milo, prized organic Carricante grapes are grown using the traditional bush-vial (alberello) method on small terraces supported by historic dry lava stone walls. From the meticulous manual harvest at the beginning of October comes a label of excellence, boasting an authentic territorial identity. Awarded the prestigious Tre Bicchieri Gambero Rosso, this wine unites the volcanic earth with the sea in a vibrant mineral elegance.
