Description

What kind of wine it is

Brentino Rosso by Maculan is a blend of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon with a deep ruby colour. Its aromatic profile reveals scents of blackberries and dark cherries, enriched by delicate hints of cedar. On the palate, it is dry and full-bodied, supported by a firm tannic structure. The clear notes of black fruits linger in a persistent finish. Its enveloping structure pairs beautifully with rich game sauces, grilled meats and mature cheeses.

Where it comes from

This red wine is born in Veneto, on the hills of Breganze. The vines sink their roots into volcanic and tuffaceous soils, a soil composition that enhances the structure and complexity of the wine. Maculan cultivates its vineyards in an ideal hilly environment, where careful agronomic work gives this label a solid identity and an authentic territorial character.

How it is produced

The production process begins with a meticulous manual harvest. Fermentation takes place in steel tanks, with several days of maceration to extract colour and substance. Afterwards, the wine matures half in steel and half in French oak barrels for a period of six months. The measured use of wood enriches the bouquet without ever overpowering the fruit, ensuring a balanced and distinctive flavour profile.

History and Curiosities

Born on the volcanic hills of Breganze, the Maculan Brentino Rosso 2023 is an elegant Veneto IGT that celebrates the excellence of a winemaking tradition begun in 1946. This enveloping blend of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, the result of careful manual selection, gains structure thanks to maturation between steel and French oak barriques. On the palate, it expresses a full body and firm tannins, offering an intense finish awarded 93 points by James Suckling. An authentic oenological masterpiece, expertly crafted by Maria Vittoria and Fausto Maculan.

Our story began in a little osteria in Mirabella, a hamlet of Breganze. Here, from the 1920s to the ‘40s, great-grandfather Gaetano produced some of the wine that served to quench the thirst of passing cart drivers.

It was grandfather Giovanni who founded the actual winery, in 1947. Between the ‘50s and ‘60s he specialized in producing substantial quantities of white and red wines, which he distributed in large-sized bottles to osterie, trattorias and grocers’ shops, the so-called "casoini".

The revolution – from a quality point of view – was the work of Fausto. In 1973, after finishing his studies in Conegliano, he returned to the company and took over the reins of the business. In spite of some initial difficulties, his tenaciousness, thirst for knowledge and desire to experiment in both the vineyards and winery led the young oenologist to become one of the major innovators in Italian wine.

Today, Maria Vittoria and Angela share the running of the estate with their father Fausto. Thanks to their professionalism and enterprise, they represent the future of the Maculan company, focusing on technological innovation, sustainability and internationalization.
