Description

Style of wine

Patricia by Girlan is a still red wine with a Denominazione di Origine Controllata (DOC) status, an authentic expression of Alto Adige. Produced from Pinot Noir grapes, with fermentation in stainless steel and ageing in oak barrels, it stands out as a medium-bodied red, characterised by ripe tannins and a distinct mineral character that accompanies a persistent finish. The aromatic profile offers hints of cherry, blackberry and wild strawberries, which blend with notes of undergrowth, spices and delicate nuances of vanilla. The balance between aromatic precision and crisp freshness makes it ideal for pairing with mushroom risottos, roasts or selections of mature cheeses.

Origin

The grapes come from vineyards located in the renowned sub-zones of Cornaiano, Mazzon and Pinzon, situated on south-facing slopes between 380 and 600 metres above sea level. The environment combines an Alpine climate with Mediterranean influences, favouring strong diurnal temperature variations essential for aromatic development. The soils feature a limestone, clay and sandy matrix, with morainic deposits on a volcanic porphyry substrate. This geological complexity gives the Pinot Noir clear aromas and a natural liveliness.

Production

Production begins with a rigorous manual harvest to preserve the integrity of the fruit. After destemming, the must is transferred by gravity into stainless steel vats for alcoholic fermentation lasting about two weeks. Once malolactic fermentation is complete, the wine matures for fifteen months in oak barrels of various sizes to refine the tannins and define the spicy character. A final rest of six months allows the wine to reach perfect gustatory harmony.

History and Trivia

Founded in 1923, Cantina Girlan embodies the profound viticultural calling of South Tyrol. The prestigious Patricia Pinot Noir originates from the finest vineyards of Girlan, Mazzon, and Pinzon. Following a rigorous manual harvest, the wine matures through a prolonged oak ageing period of fifteen months, complemented by a further six months of resting in the bottle. This artisanal dedication gives rise to an elegant and structured red wine, celebrated by major international accolades such as two glasses from Gambero Rosso and 92 points from James Suckling.

Cantina Girlan was founded in 1923 in an ancient farmstead from the 16th century. Back then 24 winegrowers laid the foundation stones of what was later to become the winery we see today. The walls, steeped in ancient tradition, and the labyrinthine corridors of the cellar harbour the secrets of state-of-the-art winemaking technology and hold the ideal conditions for ageing our wines.

Today, about 200 greatly committed and motivated winegrowers and their families farm an area covering about 230 hectares of vineyards in the best production areas of Oltradige and Bassa Atesina. Our enologist, Gerhard Kofler, keeps in close personal contact with the winegrowers and provides his professional advice during the growing season. This beneficial exchange of expertise sets the foundations for producing highest quality wines. The wines are among the most awarded in the region and available in more than 40 countries worldwide.
