Description
Type of wine
Giovanni Rosso’s Langhe Nebbiolo expresses the essence of Piedmont through the use of Nebbiolo grapes, grown in the Langhe region. This still red wine with a protected designation of origin (DOC), intense garnet red in colour, reveals crisp aromas of violet, rose and cherry. On the palate, it is well-rounded, animated by a distinct freshness and a fine tannic structure. Ageing in French oak barrels highlights an elegant structure and a smooth mouthfeel, capable of evolving gracefully over time.
Provenance
The grapes ripen in the heart of the Langhe, in the municipalities of Serralunga d’Alba and Roddino, specifically in the vineyards of the Baudana hamlet. The rows, situated between 340 and 520 metres above sea level with various exposures, give the Nebbiolo a crisp aromatic expression. The soil composition determines the particular finesse of the tannins. Under the guidance of the Rosso family, the winery constantly enhances the character of the terroir, a commitment also recognised by prestigious critical scores, such as those from James Suckling.
How it is produced
Production begins in mid-October with the manual harvesting of the clusters. After soft pressing, fermentation takes place in concrete vats thanks to the action of indigenous yeasts. Maceration on the skins is managed with daily pump-overs and délestage. Ageing takes place for several months in large French oak barrels from the Fontainebleau Forest. This process stabilises the structure, offering a wine of great drinkability and precision on the palate.
History and Curiosities
Created in 2010, the Langhe Nebbiolo DOC embodies the soul of the Giovanni Rosso winery, a historic family-run estate founded in 1960. Under the expert guidance of oenologist Davide Rosso, the winery tends the vineyards situated between Serralunga d’Alba and Roddino to offer a faithful expression of the Piedmontese territory. Production, limited to forty thousand bottles a year, confirms its rigorous artisanal vocation, also celebrated by the 91 points awarded by James Suckling. This elegant label masterfully interprets pure Nebbiolo, the region's premier grape variety.

Giovanni's son, Davide, studied Oenology and gained invaluable experience in France. In 2001 Davide, then 27 years old, took charge of the vinification & affinamento/elevage of the wines with one goal in mind: "Wine should be a perfect copy of its terroir"... in this case from the slopes of Serralunga d'Alba, among the finest soils in the world.
The Giovanni Rosso cantina (winery) is located in the hamlet of Baudana, just a couple of kilometres north of Serralunga d'Alba village. A traditional family cascina, or farmhouse, it houses the fermentation, ageing, bottling and labeling facilities as well as the offices.
Davide Rosso has been looking for many years for a new terroir where he could face a new challenge himself. The side-project was officially born in May 2016 with the purchase of the Etna estate near the village Solicchiata of Castiglione di Sicilia. The farm rises a few kilometers before Passopisciaro down to Montedolce, a small inactive crater that gives the name to the Contrada. We are in the northeast side of the volcano, a perfectly suited area for the production of red wines. The new holdings extend for fourteen hectares in one single plot among which just something more than six hectares are dedicated to viticulture: 1.2 ha for the whites and 5.5 ha for the reds (Carricante and Nerello Mascalese with small percentages of other local grape varieties, as the tradition requires). The training system has been renamed as "candelabro". Read more
