Description

What kind of wine it is

Derthona Scaldapulce by Borgogno is an organic white wine made exclusively from Timorasso grapes. Characterised by an intense yellow colour, this still wine stands out for its full structure and remarkable ageing potential. On the nose, it reveals a mineral and complex bouquet, where fruity nuances of pear and peach intertwine with hints of acacia blossom, hawthorn, aromatic herbs, honey, and distinctive hydrocarbon notes. On the palate, it is vertical and savoury, offering a dry, broad, and smooth sip, supported by pronounced acidity that balances the wine's structure, finishing with a very persistent finish.

Where it comes from

This Timorasso originates in Piedmont, in the heart of the Colli Tortonesi. The grapes come from a single, highly regarded plot, the Scaldapulce cru, a terroir that imparts a distinct saline character to the wine. Borgogno cultivates its vineyards following a strict sustainable agriculture approach, avoiding invasive interventions and preserving local biodiversity by protecting woodland areas. The identity of Derthona is reflected in every glass, offering an authentic tasting experience deeply rooted in the land, capable of enhancing the vocation of an indigenous grape variety with pronounced minerality.

How it is produced

Production begins with a manual harvest aimed at selecting only perfectly ripe bunches. In the winery, the grapes undergo cryomaceration and static decantation in steel. Fermentation takes place at a controlled temperature in cement vats for about twenty-five days. The wine then matures for eighteen months in steel through sur lie ageing, which greatly enriches its gustatory complexity. Thanks to its character, this white pairs ideally with mature cheeses, anchovies, scallops, and white meats.

History and Curiosities

Since 1761, the historic winery Giacomo Borgogno e Figli has been producing oenological excellence through rigorous organic and sustainable production, aimed at protecting the biodiversity of the Colli Tortonesi. The Derthona Scaldapulce is born from careful manual harvesting, followed by cryomaceration and fermentation in cement vats. Aged for eighteen months on the lees, this extraordinary white wine demonstrates remarkable ageing potential. The 2021 vintage highlights the expertise of winemaker Simone Borsari, celebrating the authentic soul of Timorasso DOC.

The name Borgogno is connected to one of the oldest wineries in Piedmont: in fact, in 1761 with Bartholomew Borgogno.

The winery has some interesting records: in 1861, Barolo Borgogno sealed the pact for the birth of Italian unity, and in 1908, it was served to the Tsar of all Russia during a visit to Racconigi.

The turning point came in 1920, when Cesare Borgogno began exporting abroad. However his greatest insight came when he decided to "forget" half of the production of Barolo Riserva in order to sell it 20 years later, realising the great versatility and power of Nebbiolo.

Borgogno is synonymous with slowness: the winery chooses to take its time understanding things and doing them correctly. The vineyards are cared for and attended to with only organic products.

This has resulted in the winery to gain their first Biological harvest.

The decision to plant forest on eight of their 39 hectars is to protect the biodiversity of the Langa fauna from being decimated by the  cultivation of vineyards.

Borgogno has a sense of history, tradition, and roots that blend with the innovation of the changing times.
