Description

What kind of wine it is

Munjebel Rosso CS Chiusa Spagnolo by Frank Cornelissen is an organic red wine made from Nerello Mascalese grapes. This expression of the Etna region reveals a deep profile and an important tannic structure, which requires time to fully express itself in the glass. Its rigorous and structured style evokes the character of great Italian reds, making it perfect for pairing with rich meats, pork dishes and flavourful cheeses.

Where it comes from

The grapes grow on the northern slopes of the volcano, within a natural amphitheatre located in Solicchiata, in the municipality of Castiglione di Sicilia. This ungrafted vineyard, situated at six hundred and twenty metres above sea level, is home to vines planted around 1925, tended with an organic and sustainable approach. The distinctive lava rock soil and northern exposure support the development of these ancient vines, encouraging bunches with marked concentration and a strong sense of place.

How it is produced

Vinification begins with destemming and gentle crushing, preserving the integrity of the Nerello Mascalese. Fermentation is started with a pied de cuve of indigenous yeasts, accompanied by a maceration on the skins of about fifty days to encourage the extraction of structure. Maturation continues in neutral fibreglass vats for eighteen months and is completed with further ageing in the bottle, ensuring a precise evolution focused on the wine’s natural longevity.

History and Curiosities

Born in the heart of an active volcano, Munjebel Rosso CS Chiusa Spagnolo expresses the most authentic soul of the Etna region. This extraordinary wine comes to life in a striking amphitheatre of volcanic rock in Solicchiata, at an altitude of 620 metres. The ancient ungrafted vines, planted around 1925 and cultivated according to a strict organic approach, make this vineyard one of the most prestigious in Frank Cornelissen's production. Thanks to a deep respect for natural cycles, each bottle tells the unique story of an extreme territory.

Our estate was established in 2001, when Etna as a wine region was still undiscovered. Our vineyards are located on the Northern valley of the active volcano Etna, in the oriental part of Sicily. The northern valley is considered today Etna’s top area for single-vineyard (contrada) red wines like the "Côtes-de-Nuits" in Burgundy or Piemonte’s "Barolo" area.

Our farming philosophy is based on our acceptance of the fact that man will never be able to understand nature’s full complexity and interactions. We therefore choose to concentrate on observing and learning the movements of Mother Earth in her various energetic and cosmic passages and prefer to follow her indications as to what to do, instead of deciding and imposing ourselves.
