Description

Type of wine

Flaccianello della Pieve by Fontodi is a still organic red wine that expresses the purity of Sangiovese in the Central Tuscany Hills territory. To the eye, it presents a translucent ruby red colour, a prelude to a concentrated and dense sip. On the palate, it reveals a refined austerity, supported by fine tannins and a vibrant acidity that enhances a clear mineral imprint. The finish, long and persistent, completes a complex sensory experience of great structure.

Provenance

This wine originates in the Panzano area, in the municipality of Greve in Chianti, a Florentine hilly territory ideally suited for viticulture. The grapes come from a careful selection of Fontodi's best vineyards, cultivated using the Guyot training system.

How it is produced

The vinification begins with a spontaneous fermentation conducted exclusively by indigenous yeasts. This is followed by maceration in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks for at least three weeks, a technique that allows for the extraction of structure while preserving the integrity of the fruit. After malolactic fermentation, the wine undergoes a long ageing process of 24 months in barriques and French oak barrels. This slow maturation consolidates an intense olfactory profile, characterised by clear notes of cherry and wild berries, enriched by nuances of cinchona, resin and vetiver.

Fontodi has belonged to the Manetti family since 1968, which for centuries has been dedicated to another typically Chianti activity: the production of the famous terracotta. Precisely in the name of this strong bond with the land and with a great passion for quality, the company has successfully turned towards increasingly careful cultivation of the vineyards and a deeper knowledge of the potential of Sangiovese in the Panzano area.

Fontodi is a certified organic farm and covers 170 hectares, of which more than 80 are planted with vines. The principles of naturalness and sustainability inspire the agriculture that is practised: not only are no synthetic chemical products used, but an attempt is made to make the most of the company's internal resources by reducing external inputs. For example, the vineyards are fertilised using compost produced by combining pruning residues and manure from the farm's own Chianina breeding. Respecting the environment produces better, cleaner wines with a better expression of the terroir.
