Description

Style of wine

Fontanafredda's Barbaresco Coste Rubin is a Piedmontese red wine with a Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita (DOCG) status, made from Nebbiolo grapes. In the glass, it reveals a ruby colour with garnet highlights, while the nose releases aromas of plum, blueberry and violet, interwoven with notes of liquorice and tobacco. The palate is enveloping, supported by well-structured tannins with a silky texture, leading to a warm and spicy finish. This expression of Barbaresco, matured in oak barrels and possessing vegan certification, is ideal for enhancing red meats and matured cheeses.

Origin

The grapes are grown in the Langhe, within the Coste Rubin sub-zone. The Guyot-trained vineyards extend across steep slopes facing south and south-west. The roots reach deep into Miocene-Helvetian soils, where the richness of calcareous marl infuses the wine with an elegant sapidity and clear definition. The moderate climate, with its distinct temperature range between day and night, ensures the ideal ripening of the bunches, balancing natural freshness and aromatic complexity.

How it is produced

Production begins in autumn with a meticulous manual harvest. In the cellar, fermentation at sustained temperatures employs frequent pumping over to extract colour and polyphenols. Following maceration and malolactic fermentation, the wine matures for one year in French Allier oak barrels. A period of resting in steel precedes bottle ageing, an essential phase for stabilising the structure of the red and developing its fascinating evolutionary potential.

History and trivia

Born in the heart of Piedmont from the insight of the winemaker Giorgio Lavagna, the Barbaresco Coste Rubin by Fontanafredda expresses the authentic essence of the Langhe region. The winery, whose roots date back to 1858, produces this prestigious vegan wine following sustainable practices that enhance the pure Nebbiolo. Appreciated by international critics, this red boasts an extraordinary estimated longevity of 10–15 years: a true masterpiece to be cherished over time, dedicated to those who love to savour the noblest Italian oenological traditions.

Fontanafredda is located in the Langhe (Piedmont), in the heart of Barolo production, in Serralunga d'Alba.

Like all beautiful things, Fontanafredda originates from a love story between the first King of Italy, Vittorio Emanuele II, and Rosa Vercellana.
Producers of Barolo and sumptuous wines of the Langhe, it was the scene of many firsts: they were the first Barolo to go overseas, the first to produce the first Classic Method in 1959, which was to be the forerunner of Alta Langa.

The founding principle of the winery is the concept of community.

Since 2018, Fontanafredda has been cultivating 120 organically certified hectares that are the setting for Italy's first Storytelling Village ('Villaggio Narrante'), which is still home to 12 families of workers who make the village an authentic village, alive and productive.

Fontanafredda is also hospitality, a meeting place where everyone is welcome thanks to its 4-star hospitality.

Today, the company preserves intact the testimonies of its noble past - the hunting lodge, the village, the extensive cellars, the vineyards - but continues to renew itself and experiment, perfecting what nature and history have handed down. For this reason, in the Langhe, where vines and wine bind generations to each other and shape the landscape, Fontanafredda is an essential reference point. The expression of a wine culture that comes from the earth, from the vineyard, and is refined through the work and creativity of people.

In 2021, the Alta Langa DOCG Contessa Rosa Rosé 2014 was named 'Best Sparkling Wine in the World' according to Tastingbook 2021.

In 2022 the BAROLO SERRALUNGA 2018 entered the TOP100 of WINE SPECTATOR in 78th place.

Thanks to its tannic structure, this Barbaresco enhances substantial red meat dishes, game and tagliatelle with porcini mushrooms. Its enveloping texture pairs perfectly with medium or long-matured cheeses, beef tartare and umami-rich dishes. To fully appreciate its complexity, serve it at a temperature of 18 °C, decanting it for about an hour.
