Description

What kind of wine it is

Ferrari Giulio Ferrari Riserva del Fondatore Extra Brut is a wine produced using the Traditional Method, distinguished by its brilliant straw-yellow colour with golden highlights and an extremely fine perlage. Made from Chardonnay grapes, it offers a deep aromatic profile, where notes of acacia honey, white chocolate and mature hay blend with citrus and delicate floral nuances. On the palate, it is dry and elegant, with a velvety body and great structural balance. The tasting concludes with a noble persistence, making it ideal with refined starters, fish dishes and mature cheeses.

Where it comes from

This sparkling wine originates in Trentino-Alto Adige, from the renowned Maso Pianizza vineyard, located in the municipality of Trento. The cultivation of Chardonnay takes place in a mountainous setting between five hundred and six hundred metres above sea level, with a south-west exposure that ensures freshness and expressive clarity. The wine belongs to the Trento denomination, a symbol of the region's sparkling wine excellence. The Ferrari winery, founded by Giulio Ferrari and run by the Lunelli family, is dedicated to creating outstanding sparkling wines, enhancing the unique characteristics of the mountains.

How it is produced

Production involves a rigorous manual harvest, carried out around mid-September to ensure optimal ripeness of the grapes. Following the principles of the Traditional Method, the secondary fermentation takes place in the bottle, where the wine rests for about ten years on its own cultured yeasts. This lengthy ageing is essential to achieve the aromatic complexity and fullness of flavour typical of the Riserva. The prolonged contact with the yeasts defines the Extra Brut character, giving the sparkling wine a precise structure, perfect balance and a finish of great length.

History and Curiosities

Born from Giulio Ferrari's dream of creating an Italian label comparable to the renowned Champagnes, this outstanding wine embodies absolute excellence. The legendary Riserva del Fondatore made its debut in 1972, produced with the finest Chardonnay grapes from the Maso Pianizza cru. The combination of oenological mastery and the foresight of the Lunelli family has transformed a small niche production into a global success. The 2015 vintage, awarded 96/100 by Decanter, is a Metodo Classico Sparkling Wine of aristocratic elegance, matured for 10 years on the lees.

The legend of Ferrari began with a man, Giulio Ferrari, and his dream of creating a wine in Italy inspired by the finest French Champagne.

A skilled and painstaking enologist who had studied at the prestigious School of Viticulture in Montpellier, Giulio created Ferrari in 1902, producing very few, extremely select bottles at a prohibitive price, but which were still never bought to satisfy the demand of wine lovers. In 1952 Bruno Lunelli, the owner of Trento’s best-known wine bar took over Ferrari from Giulio, who continued to work in the winery until his death. Then, thanks to meticulous labour in the winery and his innate entrepreneurial verve, Bruno Lunelli increased production until it reached a hundred thousand bottles a year. In the decades that followed, Bruno Lunelli’s sons, Gino, Franco and Mauro, brought the company, which produces exclusively Classic Method sparkling wines, to the apex of quality and fame - in other words, to the peak of excellence.

Today, as was the case in the past, the Lunelli family continues to be the lifeblood of the Ferrari brand. The third generation runs the company with respect for the past and clear ideas for the future.
Their goal is to preserve the prestige of the leading producer of the Classic Method sparkling wines in Italy and one of the top ten in the world. Whilst proudly maintaining the structure of a family-owned company, the Lunelli have conquered the market through business strategies that have made Ferrari into much more than just a successful brand. The company is a real international legend, producing the best of "Made in Italy".
