Description
What type of wine it is
Marjan Simčič's Pinot Grigio Ramato BRDA Cru Selection is an orange wine that precisely expresses the character of the Slovenian Brda region. Made from Pinot Grigio grapes, it acquires an evocative copper hue through calibrated skin maceration. On the palate, it proves to be dry, enveloping and characterised by a vibrant mineral texture, with notes of red apple, yellow plum, sweet spices and a touch of chestnut honey. This unfiltered wine is the ideal companion for shellfish, sushi, cheeses and spicy Asian dishes.
Where it comes from
The grapes come from Brda, a territory historically known as Slovenian Collio, and specifically from the Ronc Zegla vineyard. The vines, situated at an altitude of 250 metres, take root in Opoka, a complex matrix of marl, limestone and clay that gives a deep savouriness to each sip. The interaction between the altitude and the unique soil composition ensures optimal ripening of the bunches. The agricultural management of this cru selection follows rigorous organic practices, in full respect of the local ecosystem.
How it is produced
The process begins at the end of August with a manual harvest and rigorous sorting of the bunches. The must starts a spontaneous fermentation thanks to indigenous yeasts, followed by eight days of maceration in oak barrels to extract colour and define the aromatic profile. After soft pressing, the wine rests in oak barrels for twelve months, completing its evolution with a final refinement of at least six months. This approach offers an elegant sip with a harmonious balance.
History and interesting facts
An authentic tribute to the Slovenian Collio, this Pinot Grigio Ramato comes from 48-year-old vines rooted in the Opoka of the Ronc Zegla vineyard. Guardian of a precious family heritage dating back to 1860, Marjan Simčič enhances the grapes through spontaneous fermentation and eight days of skin maceration in truncated conical vats. The expert ageing for twelve months in oak yields a masterly wine, bottled without filtration. This artisanal expression, backed by 96 points from James Suckling, is a benchmark for the Brda region.
