Description

What kind of spirit is this?

Grappa di Barolo by Marolo is a structured spirit crafted from Barolo Nebbiolo pomace. With a clear amber hue, this aged grappa delivers a complex profile of raisins, dried plums, and subtle honeyed floral hints. Despite its robust 50% ABV, it remains remarkably soft and velvety. Extended oak maturation creates a persistent finish defined by vanilla and liquorice, resulting in a balanced and smooth spirit suited for careful appreciation.

Where it comes from

This spirit originates in Alba, within the renowned Langhe hills of Piedmont. Production relies entirely on high-quality Nebbiolo pomace sourced from the prestigious Barolo area. This specific raw material provides a naturally intense aromatic foundation that persists beyond distillation. By capturing the varietal characteristics of the grapes, the spirit reflects its Piedmontese origins with clarity, delivering a clean profile that honours the local distilling heritage.

How it is produced

Marolo produces this spirit through slow distillation in a discontinuous bain-marie alembic still. This gradual, temperature-controlled method ensures the aromatic precision and cleanliness of the pomace remain intact. The spirit then undergoes extended maturation in small oak casks, allowing the liquid to develop a stable amber colour while integrating primary fruit characteristics with mature tertiary notes. This wood ageing introduces rich spice, tobacco, and cinnamon, achieving a delicate structural balance.

History and Heritage

Produced by Distilleria Santa Teresa dei F.lli Marolo in Alba, in the heart of the Langhe region, this grappa holds a prestigious heritage. It is presented in an elegant drawer-style cardboard case with a numbered label. The traditional clear glass bottle is sealed with a cork and a decorative paper strip, while its elegant white label features a detailed illustration of a bird perched on a branch.

Since 1977, Marolo has distilled the spirit of the land. Grappas made from the best Italian vineyards, valorizing the extraordinary varietal heritage of the Langhe, Monferrato and Roero, areas which are recognized as UNESCO World Heritage.

Marolo represents the spirit of the land, the loyalty to its most noble vineyards and the transformation into a grappa that glorifies its natural characteristics. Distillation happens in bain marie disctoninuos stills, one for white and another for red, in small batches over a long period of time so that the original flavours of the grapes can be experienced.

Marolo is based in Alba, the capital of the Langhe, one of the world’s premier winegrowing districts for its diversity of grape varietals and the quality of its wines. The Langhe hills produce some of the finest red wines, such as Barolo, Barbaresco, Barbera, Dolcetto and Brachetto, but also great whites like Roero Arneis and the aromatic Moscato d’Asti.

Marolo’s grappas are a mirror of the incredible richness and diversity of the territory and viticulture. Not a neutral, standardized, industrial product, but a spirit able to narrate the grape from which it came, to enhance the varietal’s typical aromas, and express a unique, personal character linked to its land of origin.
