Description
What type of wine it is
Montiano by Famiglia Cotarella is a still red wine from Lazio with a protected geographical indication, a dry and elegant expression produced with Merlot grapes, fermented in stainless steel and aged in oak barrels. On the nose, it opens with a broad aromatic range, featuring notes of vanilla, small red berries, jam and sweet spices. On the palate, it proves to be structured and well-rounded, characterised by a soft and balanced texture. Each sip offers a long and persistent finish, dominated by fruity hints, ideal for pairing with game dishes or mature cheeses.
Where it comes from
The vineyards extend across the territory of Montefiascone, in a hilly area between Lake Bolsena and Orvieto, at an altitude of approximately three hundred metres. The roots go deep into soils of volcanic origin, rich in rock and stones, essential elements for giving the wine a deep concentration of flavour. The vines are cultivated using the spurred cordon system in low-yield parcels, following strict agronomic criteria. The warm climate, tempered by moderate humidity, ensures the bunches reach a perfect and consistent ripening.
How it is produced
The harvest takes place in September with a manual selection of the grapes, aimed at bringing only the most concentrated berries to the cellar. This is followed by fermentation in stainless steel at a controlled temperature, while the must rests in contact with the skins for fifteen days, using punching down to extract colour and substance. Subsequent malolactic fermentation takes place in new French oak barrels. The wine then matures in Allier and Tronçais barrels for twelve months, achieving a perfect aromatic balance.
History and curiosities
Montiano is the famous signature wine of the Cotarella Family, born from the visionary intuition of cultivating fine Merlot clones on the volcanic soils of Montefiascone. In a region of Lazio traditionally suited to white wines, this innovative red expresses an extraordinary harmony between grape variety and terroir. Thanks to its elegant and enveloping profile, it is consistently celebrated by international critics, boasting excellent scores from James Suckling and Luca Maroni, as well as having won the prestigious Tre Bicchieri Gambero Rosso.
