Description
What type of wine it is
Coppo’s L’Avvocata is a Barbera d’Asti red wine with a controlled and guaranteed designation of origin (DOCG) from Piedmont, capable of expressing the vibrant character of the Barbera grape. In the glass, it shows a lively ruby hue enriched by violet reflections. The olfactory profile offers intense aromas of cherry and raspberry, interwoven with hints of violet and nuances of dark spices such as cinchona and rhubarb. On the palate, it is fresh and remarkably juicy, supported by well-defined acidity and present but balanced tannins. The full-bodied tasting concludes with a persistent finish, characterised by a pleasant almond aftertaste, completed by ageing in large oak barrels and steel.
Where it comes from
This wine originates on the hills of Canelli, in the south of the Asti area, a Piedmontese region particularly well-suited and linked to Coppo. The vineyards extend at an altitude between 200 and 400 metres, benefiting from excellent solar exposure to the south, south-east and south-west. The temperate climate encourages constant ripening of the clusters, preserving their freshness. The soils, predominantly composed of clay-limestone marls rich in silt with sandy veins, lend savouriness to the drink, precisely enhancing the natural juiciness of the fruit.
How it is produced
The production process begins in September with a manual harvest, aimed at selecting the best bunches. In the cellar, maceration takes place in contact with the skins, with short and delicate pump-overs. Alcoholic and malolactic fermentation take place in stainless steel tanks, a technical choice to preserve aromatic clarity. Ageing continues in large oak barrels to soften the structure, then finishes in steel and with a period of rest in the bottle to guarantee perfect balance.
History and facts
The name L’Avvocata pays tribute to the strict original owner of the vineyards, a reference that contrasts fascinatingly with the joyful spirit of this Barbera d’Asti DOCG. Produced in Canelli by the centuries-old Coppo winery, whose roots date back to the 17th century, this label is intimately linked to the majestic Underground Cathedrals, historic cellars declared a World Heritage Site. This regional tribute tells the story of the connection with the south of the Asti area, offering an authentic expression of the Piedmontese winemaking tradition.

Coppo’s history is one of tradition and bold vision for the future, of sacrifice and innovation. It is a story of the unconditional love that Coppo has for their vines’ origins, for varieties that have always been cultivated in Piedmont, and for old family traditions.
The origins of the winery date back to 1892. For over 120 years, the family has remained the sole owner. Since the beginning, the Coppo family has managed estate vineyards and bottled their wine under the name of Coppo, making it one of the oldest family-run wineries in all of Italy.
In fact, in 2012, the Chamber of Commerce added the winery to the national register of historical businesses, highlighting its uninterrupted activity for over a century in the sector. Read more
