Description
What kind of wine is it
Cuvée Novecento Rosé Brut by Contratto is a Quality Sparkling Wine produced in Piedmont from Pinot Noir grapes. Vinified in a Brut style according to the Traditional Method, it appears in the glass with an onion skin pink colour and a fine and elegant perlage. The bouquet offers notes of raspberry, blackcurrant, peach blossom, toasted bread, croissant and thyme, while on the palate it is mineral and complex, finishing with a long and persistent aftertaste.
Where does it come from
This sparkling wine originates in the heart of the Langhe, in Piedmont.
How is it produced
After destemming, gentle pressing without crushing allows only the prized free-run must to be collected. To achieve the typical rosé colour, the juice remains in contact with the skins for about an hour and a half. The initial fermentation takes place in stainless steel at a controlled temperature to preserve the fragrance of the varietal aromas. Subsequently, the prise de mousse is carried out following the principles of the Traditional Method. The wine then undergoes a prolonged ageing on the lees of at least seventy months, which gives the structure remarkable breadth. The process concludes with the traditional manual riddling and a dosage of eight grams per litre.
History and Curiosities
The Cuvée Novecento Rosé Brut 2018 celebrates the fascinating history of Contratto, one of the oldest sparkling wine houses in Italy. Produced in the heart of the Langhe from pure Pinot Noir grapes, this refined Traditional Method wine is created through a delicate process without pressing, aimed at extracting only the prized free-run must. The excellence of this rare vintage is achieved through an exceptionally long ageing on the lees of at least seventy months, enhanced by traditional manual remuage. An extraordinary cuvée, awarded 94 points by Vinous, which combines minerality with absolute elegance.

Around 1910 Contratto began to export their wines. Contratto had great success in foreign markets, and the winery became synonymous with prestige and quality in the world of sparkling wines, so much so that the winery became the official wine supplier for the Vatican, the Belgian Royal Family, and in 1913 the Royal Family of Savoy. In 1919 Contratto produced its first vintage Italian sparkling, an innovative choice on the part of the Piedmontese sparkling house that aimed to highlight a single vintage's characteristics.
The Contratto family remained at the company's helm until 1993, when the Bocchino family, who owned a distillery of the same name, took the reigns of Contratto. The Bocchino family set forth the work of restoring the Wine Cathedral, the internal courtyard, and the tasting room.
Giorgio Rivetti, a huge fan of Champagne, began collaborating with the Bocchino family and immediately realized the great potential of the historic sparkling house. Shortly after, in 2011, the Rivetti family decided to take an important step and purchased the winery. This new project immediately reflects the philosophy and passion that made La Spinetta famous. A fundamental decision was directly taken: acquiring several hectares of land, some under vine, close to the little town of Bossolaso. Situated in the highest part of the Langhe, the Bossolasco zone lends itself perfectly to the cultivation of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. These grapes are used in the production of the Alta Langa DOCG. This marks the official entry of Contratto in the Consortium of Alta Langa, and Contratto becomes the reference point for the entire denomination. Read more
