Description
What kind of wine is it
The Colterenzio Gewürztraminer is an intensely aromatic still white wine, an authentic expression of Gewürztraminer grapes grown in Alto Adige. In the glass, it offers a floral and fruity bouquet, with clear hints of lychee and yellow roses, enriched by nuances of cloves and nutmeg. Aged in stainless steel on the fine lees, on the palate it presents as a full and enveloping wine, supported by a pleasant freshness and sapidity. The tasting concludes with an elegant spicy finish that extends the persistence of the olfactory sensations.
Where it comes from
This Gewürztraminer originates from the hills of Cornaiano, where the vineyards benefit from the peculiar Alpine and Mediterranean climate typical of this area of Alto Adige. Located between 400 and 460 metres above sea level, the vines enjoy ideal sun exposure for the perfect ripening of the clusters. The roots delve into morainic soils mixed with clay and porphyry gravel, elements that give the wine its marked sapidity and the precision of its aromas. In this setting, the Colterenzio winery practises viticulture that respects biodiversity, enhancing the surrounding natural environment.
How it is produced
The process begins with a cold maceration for a few hours, essential for extracting the aromatic richness of the Gewürztraminer grapes. This is followed by gentle pressing and fermentation in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks. To enhance the smoothness of the sip, the wine undergoes careful ageing on the fine lees exclusively in stainless steel until bottling. The absence of barrel ageing preserves the maximum expressive purity of the fruit. This technique results in a balanced freshness, keeping the unmistakable spicy and persistent profile typical of the variety intact.
History and curiosities
Founded in Cornaiano in 1960, Colterenzio brings together over three hundred winegrowers united by a respect for biodiversity and agricultural sustainability. Under the guidance of winemaker Martin Lemayr, the cooperative cultivates its vineyards on morainic soils, in an ideal microclimate between the Alps and the Mediterranean. This excellent Alto Adige DOC Gewürztraminer fully embodies their vision: meticulous ageing in stainless steel on the fine lees preserves its purity, offering a surprising aromatic range that celebrates the authentic vocation of this territory.

It was in the 1980s, South Tyrol was primarily a red-wine region, and the quality was run-of-the-mill. Raifer, a winegrower himself, recognised the potential of South Tyrol as an outstanding winegrowing region: The terroir was cheap, sufficient vineyard area was available and the winegrowers were hard-working and skilled. His first step in his vineyard, "Lafóa", a sunny mountain slope behind the Colterenzio cellar, was to replace the Vernatsch vines with Cabernet Sauvignon grapes, and, later, Sauvignon Blanc. He also brought in new quality standards: Lower yield for higher-quality grapes and higher-quality wines. It was on this pilot vineyard slope that, with both Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon, the new quality standard measures were introduced.
This quality philosophy extended its reach to all members of the cooperative: new grape varietals were experimented with, and quality groups created. Today, the members and workers at the cellar are committed to working in line with this model throughout the entire winegrowing area, the cellars and for all wines.
The 300 partner winegrowers of the Colterenzio winery are the backbone of the company. They work year-round on their wine hills with their families in order to supply us with top-quality wine grapes in autumn. Read more
