Description

What kind of wine it is

Pietradonice by Casanova di Neri is a masterful interpretation of Cabernet Sauvignon in Tuscan soil. It presents a deep red colour in the glass, while the bouquet is complex, characterised by aromas of blackberry and mint resting on a refined mineral background. On the palate, it reveals a full and silky body, supported by a dense and finely integrated tannic structure. The sip offers a long and harmonious persistence, ideal paired with grilled meats, game, and blue cheeses.

Where it comes from

Born in the extraordinary wine-growing landscape of Montalcino, this red reflects an identity deeply connected to its territory. The very name pays homage to the original vineyard, distinguished by soil rich in onyx. This particular geological formation, combined with the local microclimate, shapes the wine’s strong personality. The result is a distinct mineral imprint, capable of offering a persistent final freshness and a remarkable aptitude for ageing.

How it is produced

Production begins with manual harvesting, followed by a rigorous double selection to choose only the best bunches. The cellar process involves gravity-fed vinification and a fifteen-day fermentation, aimed at achieving a balanced extraction of noble compounds. Ageing continues for eighteen months in small oak barrels, which consolidate the structure while preserving the harmony of flavour. The decision not to carry out any filtration before bottling preserves its integrity and authenticity.

History and Curiosities

The 2019 Pietradonice from Casanova di Neri represents a magnificent expression of Cabernet Sauvignon in Montalcino. Born from a vineyard with onyx-rich soil, this fascinating unfiltered Toscana IGT offers a profound sensory experience. The delicate gravity-fed vinification and 18 months of ageing in small oak barrels refine dense tannins and a long finish. Awarded 95 points by James Suckling, the wine releases intense aromas of blackberry and mint, ideal for pairing with succulent grilled meats and blue cheeses at any convivial occasion.

Casanova di Neri was founded in 1971 by Giovanni Neri to embark on a great adventure. Passionate about wine, Neri had long dreamed of making a great Italian red, and although the long-established wine zone of Chianti Classico was just on his doorstep, it was remote Montalcino and its austere Sangiovese wines that fascinated him. In May 1971, he bought Podere Casanova, changed its name to Casanova di Neri, and in consultation with some of Tuscany’s leading winemakers, immediately began work to restore the estate’s existing Sangiovese vines and plant new ones. In 1991 Giovanni Neri dies. His son Giacomo takes over the running of the winery.

In 2017 Casanova di Neri expands into hospitality with the inauguration of the Relais, a charming ten-room restored farmhouse amidst the vineyards, just steps from the winery. In the same year, Gianlorenzo Neri enters the family business alongside his father Giacomo and brother Giovanni.

Wine making After the grapes are harvested strictly by hand, the bunches are transported to the winery where they are inspected on a sorting table to remove any parts not deemed suitable for the high quality that is intended to be achieved. Subsequently, a machine separates the berries from the stems, which then fall onto another sorting table. The carefully selected berries are then transferred by gravity into vats where the vinification process takes place.
