Description

What kind of wine it is

Casanova della Spinetta Sezzana is a still red wine from Tuscany, characterised by a deep ruby colour. It is created from an enveloping blend of Sangiovese and Colorino, capable of expressing a full and rigorous style. The aromatic profile opens with well-defined notes of ripe wild berries, enriched by elegant hints of vanilla and coffee. On the palate, it is clean and structured, distinguished by perfectly integrated sweet tannins that lead the sip towards a persistent finish. It is recommended to enjoy it after decanting for about two hours, paired with robust meats and flavourful first courses.

Where it comes from

The grapes come from the village of Sezzana, located in the heart of Casciana Terme, Tuscany. This area benefits from volcanic, calcareous, sandy and rocky soils: a complex combination that gives the grapes depth of flavour and vibrant colour. The La Spinetta winery cultivates its vines following the principles of the organic method, maintaining low yields per hectare to ensure high quality and optimal concentration of the raw material.

How it is produced

Vinification begins with alcoholic fermentation in rotofermenters at a controlled temperature. Subsequently, the wine undergoes malolactic fermentation in wood to soften its structure. Ageing takes place in new French oak barrels with medium toasting for a period of between twelve and fourteen months, encouraging the ideal integration of the tannins. Before being released on the market, the wine rests in steel tanks for about three months and completes its journey with a carefully calibrated aromatic evolution of a further three or four months to definitively stabilise its flavour profile.

History and Curiosities

Born from the passion of the Rivetti brothers, Casanova della Spinetta Sezzana is a prestigious red wine that captures the authentic essence of the eponymous village in Pisa. The grapes, organically grown on volcanic and limestone soils, give the 2011 vintage an enveloping and full-bodied structure. Thanks to expert ageing in French oak barriques, this wine combines the intensity of Sangiovese with the finesse of Colorino. Awarded 94 points by Robert Parker, it is ideal for enhancing special occasions.

The Rivetti family, renowned for their historic Piedmontese winery La Spinetta, arrived in Tuscany in the early 2000s bringing with them a bold and forward‑thinking vision. Among these rolling hills, they chose to give voice to the grape varieties that truly express the soul of the territory: Sangiovese, Colorino, and Prugnolo Gentile, leaving the more celebrated international varieties in the background. Every decision stems from a deep respect for nature: organic farming, extremely low yields, meticulous attention to grape quality, and slow aging in large oak casks. The result is a collection of wines that speak with elegance and authenticity, combining complexity with remarkable drinkability — a hallmark of Tuscany’s greatest expressions. Read more
