Description

What kind of wine it is

Bibbiano Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Vigna del Capannino is an organic red wine from Tuscany, made from Sangiovese Grosso grapes. This Chianti Classico Gran Selezione displays an intense ruby red colour, enhanced by purple highlights. On the nose, it offers a clear aromatic profile, where notes of black cherry and plum intertwine with balsamic hints and sweet spices such as cinnamon and cloves. On the palate, it reveals a marked savouriness enveloped in an elegant softness, qualities that make it ideal for pairing with robust meats, game, and mature cheeses.

Where it comes from

This wine originates from the Castellina in Chianti area, within the Bibbiano estate. The vineyards, which benefit from an optimal south-west exposure, stretch across hillside slopes situated between two hundred and seventy and three hundred and ten metres above sea level. The local microclimate interacts with soils composed of alberese schist and deep Pliocene clay, enriched by limestone deposits with distinctive blue veins. This geological matrix imparts a strong identity to the grapes, defining a clear territorial profile that reflects Bibbiano’s commitment to viticulture since 1865.

How it is produced

Harvesting takes place in early October, with a limited yield to preserve fruit quality. Fermentation occurs in cement vats for thirty-three days, using the délestage technique for targeted and gradual extraction. Maturation continues for twenty-four months, divided between cement and time spent in French and Slavonian oak barrels. A further final refinement of six months completes the production process, resulting in a red wine with remarkable ageing potential, capable of evolving over time and expressing itself best after about an hour of decanting.

History and Curiosities

A true expression of a winemaking tradition that has enlivened the Bibbiano family estate in Castellina in Chianti since 1865, this renowned Chianti Classico Gran Selezione is produced exclusively in the finest vintages. Made from pure Sangiovese Grosso grapes grown organically, the 2020 vintage matures for 24 months between cement vats and fine oak barrels, before further ageing in the bottle. This red wine, highly acclaimed by international critics, offers the palate an elegant smoothness and enveloping aromas of black cherry, plum, and sweet spicy and balsamic notes.

Bibbiano is located in the historic area of Chianti, in the municipality of Castellina in Chianti, and overlooks Val d’Elsa in the direction of the castle of Monteriggioni, in an area where vine cultivation has Etruscan and later Latin origins.

On the edge of this immense natural and human heritage, since 1865 our family has continued the cultivation of vineyards and olive trees with passion, making it alive, modern and up-to-date thanks to an entrepreneurial tradition that has been handed down from father to son, and which has now reached the fifth generation, in the persons of Tommaso and Federico Marrocchesi Marzi.

Surrounded by vast olive groves of more than three thousand plants, the vineyards of Bibbiano extend over a total area of about 30 hectares between 270 and 310 metres above sea level, set on hill slopes that enjoy an enviable exposure and an excellent microclimate, characterised by clay deposits of the Pliocene age that are rich in limestone.

Our aim is to produce high quality wines, by virtue of a firm choice to exalt the genius loci of Bibbiano, namely the soul of the distinctive geography and the human heritage of the place, generating balanced, elegant wines with distinctive, and sometimes even powerful, personalities with very clear textures.
