Description
What kind of wine it is
Conus Lagrein by Alois Lageder is a biodynamic and vegan red wine made exclusively from Lagrein grapes. In the glass, it displays a cherry red colour with ruby highlights. On the nose, it reveals an intense and fruity bouquet, dominated by notes of plum and wild berries, enriched with hints of liquorice, cocoa and dark chocolate on a spicy background. On the palate, it offers a vigorous and linear structure, with a medium body and smooth tannins. The sip is pleasantly dry, finishing with a distinctive mineral hint of graphite. It is ideal paired with game and mature cheeses, and shows its best if decanted for about an hour.
Where it comes from
The vines take root in Magrè on the Wine Road, in the Mitterberg area of Trentino Alto Adige. The name of the cuvée pays homage to the Magrè alluvial cone (from the Latin conus), where the Sand vineyard is located. At an altitude between 230 and 320 metres, the vines grow on gravelly and sandy soil with a high concentration of dolomitic limestone. This soil composition, situated on a gentle slope, encourages the ripening of the grapes, imparting a distinct mineral character and a precise, defined tannic structure to the wine.
How it is produced
Following natural rhythms, vinification begins with a spontaneous fermentation carried out by indigenous yeasts and careful maceration on the skins. Malolactic fermentation takes place in steel to preserve the pure aromatic expression of the fruit. The wine then undergoes a period of rest through a combined maturation, ageing partly in steel tanks and partly in large wooden casks. This production technique shapes the character of the Lagrein, integrating elegance and finesse without ever compromising the natural smoothness of the sip.
History and Curiosities
The name Conus, of Latin origin, pays homage to the detrital cone of Magrè, where the Sand vineyard is located at an altitude of 230-320 metres. The Alois Lageder family estate cultivates the grapes following a strict biodynamic philosophy, to fully enhance the authenticity of the South Tyrolean terroir. Vinified through spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts, this fascinating Lagrein Mitterberg IGT expresses a pure connection with nature. Awarded 92 points by James Suckling, this wine masterfully combines artisanal excellence with a profound respect for the environment.
