Viticulture in Trentino has very ancient origins: it dates back to 2000 B.C., a period to which numerous wine amphorae found during archaeological excavations date back. It was, however, with the advent of the Romans that production experienced its heyday with the marketing of the wines produced throughout the empire. The blossoming and flourishing of the vines is due to the climate characterised by strong temperature fluctuations combined with wind drainage and favourable sun exposure, which give Trentino wines unique organoleptic properties with very intense aromas. Wine production is equally divided between black and white grapes. The main grape varieties include chardonnay and schiava, while red grapes include pinot noir, teroldego, cabernet sauvignon, merlot and lagrein. Finally, white grapes include pinot grigio, moscato giallo, nosiola and riesling.
