The wines of Molise: The best wines of Molise on offer

Despite being a small region in the south of Italy, Molise has no less than 8,000 hectares of land dedicated to the cultivation of vines. This is a very ancient tradition, dating back as far as 5,000 B.C., the period in which the earliest written records of vine cultivation are dated. Before the advent of the Roman Empire, in which wine production reached its peak, it was the Samnite populations that introduced innovative techniques that enabled flourishing development. The most widely produced wines of Molise are those from the cultivation of red grapes such as montepulciano, tintilia, sangiovese, merlot, barbera and ciliegiolo. White grapes, on the other hand, are mainly Malvasia di Candia, Trebbiano Abruzzese, Manzoni Bianco, Trebbiano Toscano, Moscato Bianco and Sauvignon Bianco. On xtraWine you can find the best wines from Molise, all with Controlled Designation of Origin status, which has also earned them awards from Bibenda, Gambero Rosso and Veronelli. The Molise wines offered by xtraWine all come from important wineries such as: Di Majo Norante, Cianfagna and Vinica, and they are all distinguished by their smooth flavour and pleasant persistence, making them easy to pair with any dish, whether meat or fish.

Molise

Country name Italy
History The troubled historical situation of this region has left deep scars that time has not yet healed. In history, Molise was part of a Roman region together with Abruzzo. Later, this territory became the land of the Samnites; conquered by the Lombards, Saracens, Byzantines, and later a land of Frederick II. It was then that the name Molise took hold, as the Counts of Molise prevailed among the various fiefdoms into which it was divided. Later, it was hit by an economic and social collapse which continued even after the annexation to the Kingdom of Italy, where Molise together with Abruzzo formed a single region. In 1963, Molise split from Abruzzi to become independent.

Soil and climate The climate is typically continental with cold Winters and hot Summers. Snowfall abound in mountainous areas. The rains are scarce in the Summer months. The climate is mild on the coast.
Surface area 4438
Typical dishes Like Abruzzo, Molise draws its products from the sea, agriculture and pastureland, remaining essentially faithful to the peasant civilisation, also bearing in mind the ruggedness of the soil and its low fertility have been the basic factors in the region's poor development. A Molise menu generally begins with very tasty mixed cold meats, such as 'soppressata', sausages with fennel or black pepper preserved in fat, mutelle, cured meats rich in chilli pepper, 'nirvi' and 'musse', a typical appetiser of the Campobasso area made from veal snout. First courses include the typical maccheroni alla chitarra served with a lamb and pepper ragout, or with fresh tomatoes and the ever-present chilli pepper, and fusilli, rolled rectangular pasta.
Typical products Molise, which had never distinguished itself in making quality wines, has recently had some DOC areas: Molise, Biferno and Pentro producing reds, whites and rosés. Aglianico also grows in Molise, where Di Majo Norante does excellent work with these grapes, as do Montepulciano and Falanghinaa.
