Lagavulin Distillery is located in the bay of the same name on the south coast of Islay Island, in Port Ellen, within a picturesque group of buildings. In 1816, the distillery John Johnston founded the first legal distillery near the Castle of Dunyvaig Castle. The following year, Archibald Campbell founded a second distillery, probably called Ardmore. After Johnston's death, a Glasgow merchant, Graham, bought Lagavulin, then joined the two distilleries.
His successors, James Logan Mackie & Co., brought the company forward, opening new distilleries. Lagavulin produces whiskeys, all single malts, the most pale of all Islay Island, for many are considered the very essence of the island
