Description

What kind of wine it is

Etna Bianco Pietrarizzo by Tornatore is a still white wine created from a blend of Carricante and Catarratto Bianco Comune grapes. It displays an intense straw yellow colour with subtle greenish highlights. On the nose, it offers delightful aromas of exotic fruit, with prominent notes of grapefruit and white peach. On the palate, it reveals a pronounced mineral freshness and marked savouriness, well balanced by a pleasant softness. Thanks to its complexity, it is ideal for accompanying starters and main courses based on fish, especially when served well chilled.

Where it comes from

Production takes place in Sicily, within the renowned Pietrarizzo district, in the Etna area. The vineyards are located on the northern slope of the volcano, in the municipality of Castiglione di Sicilia, and are cultivated using the spur cordon system. The Tornatore winery enhances the influence of the volcanic soils, which impart a strong territorial identity to the grapes. This unique pedoclimatic environment, combined with careful yield management, is reflected in the vibrant gustatory tension that characterises the wine.

How it is produced

The manual harvest takes place in the second half of October, followed by a meticulous selection of the grapes upon arrival at the winery. After destemming and gentle crushing, soft pressing is carried out. The must ferments at a controlled temperature in oak barrels. Subsequently, the structure is enhanced through ageing on fine lees for about five months. The process continues with a further period in barrels for another five months and a final resting period, aimed at achieving perfect organoleptic balance.

History and Curiosities

Produced on the northern slope of the volcano, in Castiglione di Sicilia, this wine reflects the deep dedication of the Tornatore winery, which has been connected to this land since 1865. The historic district of Pietrarizzo is one of the most prized crus of the entire Etna DOC denomination, capable of offering excellent grapes, rigorously selected by hand. The elegant 2023 vintage, awarded the Tre Bicchieri by Gambero Rosso, envelops the palate with gentle notes of white peach and a vibrant mineral freshness, providing a complex and authentically volcanic tasting experience.

Founded in 1865 by Francesco Tornatore’s great-grandfather, the winery has carried on a winemaking tradition rooted in the fertile lands of Etna for more than 150 years. In 1910 grandfather Giuseppe consolidated the family business by building a palmento in contrada Piano Fiera, marking the beginning of an expansion that would encompass other valuable land on Etna’s northern slope. Our deep knowledge of the land, enriched by decades of experience and passed from generation to generation, allows us today to look to the future with the certainty of those who have always known how to respect the land and its traditions, continuing our commitment to excellence and innovation in the world of wine.
