| Soil composition | Milo, on the eastern slope of Mount Etna, is the home of Carricante grapes. Often lashed by heavy rains, it has the highest percentage of rainfall on the entire island. The soil composition is complex with extreme pedo-climatic conditions, which if skilfully sustained are able to give wines unique in taste and longevity. The soil, made up of centuries of volcanic activity, has several layers of minerals and salts, pumice, lapilli, fine and light ash. This terroir, which has a sub-acid reaction, is particularly fertile and capable of producing a very high total acidity. Here Carricante finds its pure and typical expression. The unique conditions allow grapes to be grown at incredibly high altitudes, with great potential for ripening and late ageing. |
