Description
What kind of wine it is
Rotenberg by Marcel Deiss is a dry white wine from Alsace, created from a meticulous vineyard blend of Riesling and Pinot. It presents a golden colour and a profile that combines volume with vibrant freshness. It reveals a pronounced mineral character intertwined with citrus notes of lemon, lemongrass, and orange zest. The elegant structure ensures a taut and persistent sip, excellent to enjoy immediately but also boasting outstanding ageing potential. At the table, it perfectly balances the richness of foie gras, and precisely enhances shellfish, fine fish, gingered poultry, and fresh goat’s cheeses.
Where it comes from
This white wine is born in Bergheim, in the Rotenberg terroir, historically known as the Red Hill. The vineyard enjoys a sunny southern exposure, a condition that favours grape ripening while maintaining a distinct gustatory energy. The deep soils, composed of Jurassic oolitic limestone and iron-rich red earth, give the glass a taut and distinctly savoury texture. The warm microclimate and strong influence of the soil shape a mature citrus profile, ensuring a broad, enveloping progression with a profound sense of place.
How it is produced
Vinification begins with a gentle whole-bunch pressing, followed by spontaneous fermentation triggered by indigenous yeasts. The wine then rests for a twelve-month maturation on fine lees in large oak barrels. This prolonged stay in wood enriches the wine’s volume, defining its flavour profile without ever compromising its natural tension. The targeted technical approach and skilful use of oak preserve the delicate structural balance, resulting in a dense and expressive glass.

Managed today by Jean-Michel DEISS, the domaine consists of 26 hectares (52 acres) of hillside vineyards spread over 9 communes and approximately 20 kilometers.
The extreme variation in conditions of production at the domaine have led Jean-Michel DEISS to seek to express in each wine the three factors that make a wine complete : the grape variety, the vintage and the terroir.
The greater the wine, the more the gustatory characteristics linked to the soil take the place of the typicity linked to grape variety or vintage.
When speaking of terroir, the following have to be taken into consideration : geology, pedology, climate and microclimate, technical exploitation of the character of the soil, microfauna and flor, and the traditional methods and techniques used to produce wines. Read more
