Information about Mauritius

Region
Mauritius
Country
Mauritius
Climate and soil
Located in the intertropical belt, the island has a humid tropical climate, with almost constant and high temperatures (26-27 ° C), especially in the coastal area. Rainfall prevails in the summer season (October to April). The watercourses are numerous and short and their flow rate varies according to the frequency and intensity of the rains. Eucalyptus and conifer forests are extensive, as are several palm trees such as the traveller's tree, the result of intense reforestation (the forest covers about 30% of the territory); some species of animals, such as birds without wings, have now disappeared.
History
The island was discovered by the Portuguese in 1505; in the 17th century the Dutch, who gave it the name M. (from Maurizio di Nassau), tried to colonize it. French rule followed - with the transplant of settlers to the island renamed Île de France by nearby Réunion - from 1715 to the Napoleonic wars, which saw the conquest of the island by Great Britain (1810). The British favoured the import of immigrants from Africa and especially from India. Hence the composite structure of the population. The granting of the right to vote in 1947 automatically nominated the Indians to become the leading group in an independentist perspective in competition with the Franco-Mauritians and Creoles, who were more willing, also for reasons of self-defence, to maintain a relationship with Great Britain. The 1967 elections gave a majority to the Independence Party of S. Ramgoolam and on March 12, 1968 Mauritius became an independent state within the Commonwealth.
Typical dishes
Mauritius' gastronomy is spicy, appetizing, colourful, full of extraordinary scents and flavours, lit up by the spices that enhance the raw materials. You'll be spoilt for choice between Creole rougailles, tandoori, masala and other Indian curries (which here become carts), the predominant flavours of the island's gastronomy. There are also sweet-and-sour Chinese dishes, typical Provencal recipes and so on that mix with a sprinkling of French taste, in a melting pot of flavors that reflects that of the races of the island.
