History |
Petra is a natural oasis extending over 350 hectares in Val di Cornia, a southern area of Tuscany, nestled between the Colline Metallifere, the Montioni Park and the Tyrrhenian Sea, with the Island of Elba just to the south. Visiting the Petra microcosm means immersing oneself in one of the oldest and richest areas in the world from an oenological point of view, an area with a strong agricultural vocation, where the culture of wine has been intertwined with the history of man since the time of the Etruscans and Greeks. An ecosystem where Bordeaux varieties have been cultivated for more than two hundred years. |
Origin |
Petra vineyard, loc. San Lorenzo Alto |
Climate |
The mild and rainy winter favoured an early vegetative development of the vines. However, in the last week of March, falling temperatures delayed budding, restoring normal plant equilibrium. The mild and rainy spring allowed the grapes to develop perfectly, as well as ensuring good water reserves. The long drought and high temperatures in July and August highlighted the importance of a terroir suited to viticulture and careful, meticulous soil management. The right attention in the vineyard made it possible to tackle the harvest with grapes of great concentration and balance. |
Soil composition |
Limestone nature with the right balance, well-structured and moderately deep skeleton with slopes of around 10-15%. |
Harvest |
Following rainfall in the second week of September, lower temperatures led to optimal ripening of the Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon varieties. The harvest of Merlot destined for Petra began on 15 September, followed by Cabernet Franc in the last days of the month, and concluded with Cabernet Sauvignon in the first ten days of October. Over the course of the year, the large temperature swings between day and night reached 20 °C during the hottest months, a fundamental factor in accentuating the fruity and aromatic notes of the grapes. |
Vinification |
Petra draws its strength and uniqueness from the magnificent land that gave birth to it. The Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc grapes come from the winery's best vineyards in the vicinity of the Petra cellar. The long maturation in French oak barrels, the intriguing structure and the unique terroir make this wine one of the highest expressions of the Suvereto area. Maturation and fermentation take place in 100-hectolitre truncated oak vats for about 25 days at a controlled temperature. |
Ageing |
Afterwards, the wine is transferred to barriques for malolactic fermentation and, after 18 months of maturation in wood, it is blended and prepared for bottling. Finally, the wine rests in the bottle for about another 18 months before sale. |
