Sweden is the largest and most populous of the Nordic Countries. It borders Norway to the west and north, Finland to the east, and is connected to Denmark in the southwest by a bridge–tunnel across the Öresund. Despite its poslition, Sweden' climate is generally mild. It often has warm continental summers, being located in between the North Atlantic, the Baltic Sea, and vast Russia. Nevertheless, the general climate and environment vary significantly from the south and north due to the vast latitudinal difference, and much of Sweden is characterised by cold and snowy winters. Southern Sweden is predominantly agricultural, while the north is heavily forested and includes a portion of the Scandinavian Mountains. Sweden is known for its highly qualified vodka and liquor but the interest in local gin production and gin consumption has started to pick up in the early 2000s.

Climate and soil	Given the considerable extent of the territory in latitude, the climatic differences are considerable. The average annual temperature ranges from 9 °C to -1 °C. Summers are cool: the average temperature of the hottest month (July) varies between 11 °C in the north and 19 °C in the south. In the coldest month (January), in southern Sweden, affected by the mitigating action of the Gulf Stream, the average temperature is 0 °C, while in Norrland it is -16 °C.
History	The history of Sweden is not very well known. The history of the country is, in fact, shrouded in the mists of time. Besides Norse mythology and Germanic legend, only a few historical sources describe the historical evolution of the country. Mentions to the country (Svear_ can be found already in Tacitus and his lineages of the Svions (Suiones). Other mentions of Swedes and Sweden can also be found in later authors such as Jordan and Procopius. Both referred explicitly to the Svions (Svear), a tribe (or peoples) in the province of Uppsala. Other mentions of other tribes that occupied the territories now belonging to Sweden were the Gauti, based on the south of Lake Vänern and the Skridfinni thought to have inhabited the northernmost part of Sweden. Populated by different races and divided into several small independent kingdoms, Sweden acquired a certain unity during the times of the Germanic tribes migration, when the kings of the Svear gradually extended their dominion toward the shores of the Baltic Sea and the Baltic islands. The first historical sources produced in Sweden date back to the 11th century. Up to that point, it is difficult to distinguish between the many myths and legends that characterise the Nordic countries, and historical events. The modern Swedish state was formed over a long period of unification that some historian set between the 6th and the 16th century. Starting from the 14th century, Sweden's politics and commerce became intertwined with those of Norway and Denmark with the three eventually uniting in the Kalmar Union. The Union didn't last long due to acts of resistance and rebellion from Denmark as well as Sweden. It was in the 17th century that the country emerged as a strong State, also experimenting in slavery and imperialism. Nevertheless, since then, the country has declined to join an international alliances and has focused on maintaining its political stability and increase its population's wealth and well being.
Typical dishes	Perhaps the most popular dish are the svenska köttbullar, or meatballs with potatismos (mashed potatoes with butter, salt and a drop of milk), gräddsås (cream sauce) and lingonsylt (cranberry jam). But the Scandinavian food tradition is not limited to meatballs, salmon or the inevitable herring, whether smoked, fried, marinated or stewed. Swedish cuisine is closely linked to the atmosphere of the North.
