Aging The wines remain in the Douro until the following spring, when they are taken to V.N. Gaia and enter the ageing cellars of Sandeman for ageing in oak barrels, as required by the traditional Port ageing system. Over the years, the excellent wines selected are carefully tasted and analysed by the winemakers, racked off the lees and any corrections deemed necessary are made. The final blend is derived from a rigorous selection of wines aged between 15 and 40 years, masterfully combined to maintain the unique identity, style and texture.

Description

Special selections of Port are aged in wooden barrels to promote concentration of fruit and flavour. The colour matures from deep ruby red to amber, producing a unique and delicious Tawny Port. The harmonious balance of maturity and fruit makes this wine the perfect conclusion to a meal and the inspiration for good conversation.

Sandeman is a quality port wine born in 1790 at the hands of the Scottish George Sandeman who at the age of 25, cunning and ambitious, was determined to make his fortune in the wine trade. The young man achieved his goal in just 7 years, founding 1 of the most famous brands in the spirits industry today. And this is but a taste of an exciting 200 year long saga, which tells of the care and craftsmanship that distinguish some of the best wines in the world. Read more

Delicious served slightly chilled as an elegant accompaniment to a rich starter such as foie-gras, a tangy cheese quiche, savoury vol-au-vent or a seafood gratin. Perfect with selected desserts such as crème brûlée and tarte tatin, with dried fruit or a simple fresh peach. Served cold, it is an elegant aperitif.

Wine making Produced using the traditional Port method. The hand-picked grapes are destemmed and crushed before fermentation at a controlled temperature, with skin maceration to extract the best components. The addition of alcohol at the right time defines the balance between the body and bouquet of the wine. This moment is chosen by the winemaker after a rigorous control of temperatures and fermentation density, which depends on the grape variety, the stage of maturation and the final sweetness required.
