Description
What kind of wine is it
Pinot Nero Sancaba is a still red wine with Indicazione Geografica Tipica status that clearly expresses the characteristics of the Pinot Noir grape in the Tuscan region. On the palate, it is clean and elegant, with good structure and a pleasant underlying freshness. The vinification, carried out with indigenous yeasts and the use of some whole bunches, defines a clear aromatic profile, rich in notes of wild strawberry, redcurrant and raspberry. The flavour profile is supported by silky tannins that guide the sip towards a long and persistent finish.
Where does it come from
The grapes come from the vineyards of San Casciano dei Bagni, located between 650 and 750 metres above sea level in southern Tuscany. This environment boasts a mountain climate with constant winds and marked daily temperature variations, ideal conditions for encouraging slow and gradual ripening. The soils, composed of friable clay, schist and a high slate content, give the wine a distinct mineral character. Sancaba's viticultural approach aims to translate these territorial characteristics into a sip of great finesse.
How is it produced
In the winery, fermentation takes place over about ten days in steel and wooden containers, with careful colour extraction managed through extended pump-overs and gentle punch-downs. Afterwards, the wine rests for eight months in oak barrels of the third and fourth passage, a practice that enriches the aromatic component with delicate spicy notes without overpowering the fruit's identity. To enhance the velvety structure and expressive bouquet, it is recommended to decant for one hour and serve at a temperature between 16 and 18°C.
History and Curiosities
The Sancaba project originated in San Casciano dei Bagni, where Pinot Noir thrives thanks to a mountainous climate characterised by significant temperature variations. High-density cultivation on schist-rich soils results in a limited production of extraordinary elegance, in true Burgundian style. A genuine pride of the Tuscan region, the 2023 vintage delights even the most discerning palates, boasting prestigious accolades such as 93 points from Decanter and 3 gold stars from Veronelli.

Between 2014 and 2016 various different approaches were experimented both in the vineyard and in the winery and it was decided not to release the wines on the market. In 2017 the new high density vineyards planted in 2013 began to produce their first crop and production resumed with a gradual increase in the number of bottles produced from 1200 to 3300, eventually reaching the current 6000 level. In 2021 the original farmhouse and winery undergo restoration and production is planned to return home on the estate at San Casciano under the supervision of Carlo Franchetti with the assistance of oenologist Gianluca Colombo.
In 2022, Petit Sancaba goes into production for the first time, produced with grapes from a young vineyard and second choice Sancaba grapes. In 2024 it is the turn of Sancaba Bianco, produced from Grechetto grapes planted in 2018 and 2019.
The name Sancaba is an acronym invented by Carlo Franchetti as a tribute to the town of San Casciano dei Bagni. Read more
