Description
What kind of wine it is
Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Poggio Rosso di San Felice is a still red wine with a Controlled and Guaranteed Designation of Origin (DOCG) produced in Tuscany, made exclusively from Sangiovese grapes. The winemaking process defines a structured style, supported by a pleasant acidity and silky tannins. On the palate, it reveals an enveloping profile reminiscent of notes of plum, blackberry and raspberry, enhanced by nuances of dark chocolate, roasted coffee and sweet spices. Ageing in French oak barrels defines its complexity and significant ageing potential.
Where it comes from
This red wine is born at the San Felice estate in Castelnuovo Berardenga, in the heart of the Siena area. The grapes come from the Poggio Rosso plot, a vineyard located four hundred metres above sea level. The terroir plays a crucial role: the medium-textured soils, characterised by the presence of alberese and galestro, provide an unmistakable territorial imprint. The alberese brings freshness and finesse, while the galestro gives the flavour structure a profound tension and dynamism, precisely reflecting the geological identity of its place of origin.
How it is produced
After the harvest, vinification takes place in stainless steel tanks with maceration on the skins aimed at the optimal extraction of colour and aromas. The subsequent malolactic fermentation contributes to harmonising the flavour profile, making it more velvety. The maturation period involves patient ageing in French oak barrels, completing with careful final refinement. This technical approach results in a wine with a strong character, capable of combining a dry palate with great expressive precision.
History and Curiosities
Produced at the San Felice Estate in Castelnuovo Berardenga, this Chianti Classico Gran Selezione expresses the authentic identity of the Poggio Rosso vineyard. The vines, 100% Sangiovese, planted at an altitude of 400 metres since the late 1970s, result in a limited production of 8,000 bottles. After ageing for 20 months in French oak and 15 months in the bottle, the wine reveals a deep and vibrant structure. This artisanal gem, with an ageing potential of twenty years, translates the mineral essence of the Sienese terroir into an enveloping tasting experience.
