Description
The fruit of a decade-long project by Le Rocche Malatestiane, Sigismondo is a Sangiovese Superiore DOC produced by a proven team that relies on the collaboration of some of Romagna's leading winemakers, viticulturists, and agronomists. Always attentive to the roots of its territory, the renowned Rimini winery has succeeded in combining in this wine a passion for tradition with the necessary innovation to satisfy consumer tastes. Boasting the title of being the only Sangiovese in the Rimini area to be awarded the prestigious "Tre bicchieri" prize by the experts at Gambero Rosso for best quality-price ratio, this wine represents one of the greatest successes of all Romagna wine production. Sigismondo is a wine made from 100% Sangiovese grapes grown in vineyards characterized by limestone soil and gray clay—located in Coriano, in the province of Rimini—on sunny, low-altitude hills overlooking the sea. This Sangiovese is vinified in red with 12 days of maceration and delestage. Aging takes place in a mixed manner, using a period in barrique followed by a second, longer period in steel, for a total duration of one year. The result is a delicious still red wine that enhances the many diversities of its terroir and interprets them in the spirit of specialization and modernity, but without forgetting its cultural roots (starting with the name, chosen in homage to Sigismondo Pandolfo Malatesta, Lord of Rimini in the 15th century).

I Malatesta, especially Sigismondo Pandolfo, were great leaders and patrons, and thanks to them works of art and architecture were made such as the strongholds and fortresses that can be seen on the hills, where we cultivate our vines.
The wines of Le Rocche Malatestiane are produced by 500 growers who directly farm 800 hectares of vineyards distributed on the hills of the Province of Rimini, from upper Val Marecchia to the hinterland of Cattolica, on the border between the Romagna and Le Marche regions.
From this wealth of vineyards the best grapes of the CDO (DOC) Colli di Rimini and CDO (DOC) Romagna are produced. Our territories look like a mosaic of terroirs, different in altitude, in the type of soil and the position from the sea.
Since 2011, with the project "Land of Sangiovese from Rimini", the company has wanted to redevelop its identity through the enhancement of the Sangiovese grape that most distinguishes us because it represents over 70% of our local productions.
Therefore we invested in the analysis of soils with a zoning which outlined three major terroirs and thanks to new grape selection methods in the winery and a separate vinification, it was possible to create an interpretation that better respected the characteristics of the grape variety and terroirs of origin.
Alongside the production of Sangiovese there are productions of native grapes such as Rebola, Pagadebit and Biancame and international varieties such as Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay that have found a positive expression in the Rimini area.
Our cultural roots and our passion for the territory have led to the restoration of a magnificent underground cave in the heart of Monte Giove, the hill on which Santarcangelo di Romagna stands, in the Province of Rimini. Here we refine the sangiovese Mons Jovis, in conditions of temperature stability and balance of all the factors that make the wine extraordinary. Read more
