Description

What type of wine it is

The Chianti Classico from Isole e Olena is a Tuscan red wine with the Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita (DOCG) classification, fermented in stainless steel tanks and aged in large wooden barrels. This blend of Sangiovese, Canaiolo and Syrah releases clear cherry aromas, intertwined with notes of violet, underbrush and truffle. On the palate, it reveals a structured and elegant profile, supported by a lively acidity and soft tannins. The sip concludes with a long and fruity finish, characterised by a pleasant mineral tension.

Where it comes from

Produced in San Donato in Poggio, in the heart of Chianti Classico, this wine comes from vineyards situated between 300 and 480 metres above sea level, with south-facing exposures that guarantee optimal ripening. The vines, ranging in age from 10 to 50 years, are rooted in soils rich in limestone, galestro, marl and sandstone. This geological composition gives the wine a slight mineral tension and a well-defined tannic texture.

How it is produced

Vinification involves fermentation in stainless steel aimed at preserving the fragrance of the fruit. Subsequently, the wine matures for twelve months in large wooden barrels, where it develops complexity and structure. This is followed by a final ageing period of six months, essential for harmonising the freshness and aromatic bouquet. The result is a balanced red, characterised by a solid ageing potential.

History and facts

This estate, run by Paolo de Marchi, is yet another that has seen a dramatic rise in quality over the last few decades. Paolo's family, originally from Piedmont, purchased the estate in the 1960s. His attention to detail in both the vineyard and the winery was the driving force that turned quality around. Experience working a vintage or two in California helped, but no doubt the input received from oenological consultant Donato Lanati has also been of significance.

The wines have Cepparello at their head, a barrique-aged Sangiovese classified as an IGT - because at the time of its creation in the 1980s a wine comprising 100% Sangiovese could not legally be labelled as Chianti. There is a Chianti Classico and a Vin Santo, as well as some excellent wines from the Collezione de Marchi label, including a Syrah called Eremo, a Cabernet Sauvignon and a Chardonnay.
