Description

What kind of wine it is

Sedàra by Donnafugata is a red wine with the Sicilia controlled designation of origin, the result of a careful blend in which Nero d’Avola is combined with Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah. Vinified in stainless steel, it displays a ruby red colour with violet highlights. The aromatic profile reveals a fruity and spicy bouquet, with notes of blackberry, cherry and plum, enriched by black pepper and a subtle balsamic hint. On the palate, it offers a lively freshness and extremely smooth tannins, ensuring a rich, savoury sip with a gastronomic character, ideal for accompanying hearty Mediterranean dishes.

Where it comes from

The vineyards stretch across south-western Sicily, mainly on the Contessa Entellina estate, on hilly terrain situated between two hundred and six hundred metres above sea level. The clay-loam soils, characterised by a rich limestone component and minerals such as potassium and magnesium, deeply nourish the vines. The Mediterranean climate, marked by dry, breezy summers, features significant temperature variations between day and night, which help preserve the natural acidity of the grapes and enhance the intensity of the aromatic profile.

How it is produced

After manual harvesting and careful selection, fermentation in stainless steel begins. Gentle maceration on the skins for about ten days at a controlled temperature allows for the extraction of colour and structure, while subsequent malolactic fermentation helps to smooth out any harshness. The process continues with maturation in cement or steel tanks for about eight or nine months. A further period of rest before release completes the winemaking journey, resulting in a harmonious sip, perfectly balanced and distinguished by remarkable persistence.

History and Curiosities

Born in 1995, this Sicilia DOC red from Donnafugata weaves together the art of winemaking with the allure of cinema. The 2023 vintage celebrates the irresistible Angelica Sedàra, portrayed by Claudia Cardinale in “The Leopard”, reflecting her elegance. The artistic label recalls the cellars of Contessa Entellina, the land where these native grape varieties have their roots. Awarded 94 points by Luca Maroni, this wine offers a harmonious experience that pays homage to the beauty and traditions of the Sicilian territory.
