Description
What kind of wine it is
Colterenzio Gewürztraminer is a still white wine of great aromatic intensity, made from Aromatic Traminer grapes. In the glass, it displays a bright golden colour, heralding an intense bouquet with notes of yellow roses, lychee, cloves and nutmeg. On the palate, it offers a full and enveloping sip, balanced by lively freshness and a pleasant savouriness. The tasting concludes with an elegant spicy finish, which prolongs the olfactory sensations with remarkable persistence.
Where it comes from
The grapes grow in the Alto Adige region, in the area of Cornaiano. The vineyards are situated between 400 and 460 metres above sea level, benefiting from a climate that combines Alpine and Mediterranean influences with abundant sunshine. The soil is characterised by moraine deposits with clay and porphyritic gravel, a matrix that encourages clear aromatic expression and pronounced savouriness. Colterenzio operates here, a winery founded in 1960 by a group of winegrowers united by a deep respect for the land.
How it is produced
The process begins with several hours of cold maceration to carefully extract the varietal aromas. This is followed by gentle pressing and fermentation of the must in stainless steel tanks at a controlled temperature, ensuring absolute purity of expression. The wine then undergoes careful ageing on fine lees, still in steel, until bottling. This process enhances the structure and smoothness of the sip, highlighting the richness of the fruit without any external interference.
History and Curiosities
Born in Cornaiano, this Gewürztraminer Alto Adige DOC embodies the excellence of the Colterenzio winery. Led by oenologist Martin Lemayr, the vines grow on moraine deposits in a microclimate suspended between the Alps and the Mediterranean. Care in the cellar, through gentle pressing and slow ageing on fine lees, ensures a surprising aromatic breadth. Each glass celebrates the story of a cooperative dedicated to sustainable farming practices, offering a pure and environmentally respectful tasting experience.

It was in the 1980s, South Tyrol was primarily a red-wine region, and the quality was run-of-the-mill. Raifer, a winegrower himself, recognised the potential of South Tyrol as an outstanding winegrowing region: The terroir was cheap, sufficient vineyard area was available and the winegrowers were hard-working and skilled. His first step in his vineyard, "Lafóa", a sunny mountain slope behind the Colterenzio cellar, was to replace the Vernatsch vines with Cabernet Sauvignon grapes, and, later, Sauvignon Blanc. He also brought in new quality standards: Lower yield for higher-quality grapes and higher-quality wines. It was on this pilot vineyard slope that, with both Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon, the new quality standard measures were introduced.
This quality philosophy extended its reach to all members of the cooperative: new grape varietals were experimented with, and quality groups created. Today, the members and workers at the cellar are committed to working in line with this model throughout the entire winegrowing area, the cellars and for all wines.
The 300 partner winegrowers of the Colterenzio winery are the backbone of the company. They work year-round on their wine hills with their families in order to supply us with top-quality wine grapes in autumn. Read more
