Description
The structured essence of South Tyrolean red
Kaltern Caldaro's Lagrein Riserva Lareith is a still red wine made from Lagrein grapes, an authentic expression of the Alto Adige appellation. This wine stands out for its structured and complex profile, capable of combining great concentration with an extremely enveloping mouthful. On the palate, it is generous, characterised by soft tannins and a flavour profile that culminates in a long and persistent finish, accompanied by a fine bouquet of small red fruits and pure chocolate. Its distinct territorial identity, typical of 100% Lagrein, anticipates a narrative rooted in a mountain terroir highly suited to quality viticulture, completing its journey with twelve months of ageing in wooden barrels.
The clayey terroir of the Caldaro hills
The grapes destined for this label are grown on the Caldaro hills, a wine-growing area of excellence located within Trentino-Alto Adige. The vineyards, cultivated using the Guyot system, enjoy excellent exposure to the east and south-east, situated at an altitude of between 230 and 260 metres above sea level. The soil is a calcareous-clayey terrain, well-drained and particularly warm, enriched with gravel. This specific geological conformation, combined with the thermal variations typical of the pre-Alpine climate, ensures optimal vegetative development for the vines, favouring the aromatic concentration and freshness that define the wine's expressive character.
Controlled fermentation and wood ageing
The production process begins with a careful harvest, followed by alcoholic fermentation conducted at a controlled temperature of 28 degrees Celsius. During this phase, the must undergoes maceration on the skins for two weeks, a fundamental technical step for the optimal extraction of colour and polyphenolic components. Subsequently, the wine completes malolactic fermentation, which helps to soften its acidic and structural profile. Ageing takes place for twelve months in wooden barrels, a rest period that provides great balance before a light filtration preceding the final bottling.
History and interesting facts

Thanks to an excellent autumn, the 2023 harvest resulted in an extraordinary quality of grapes. Originating in Caldaro from historic vines aged between ten and twenty years, this Lagrein boasts a history of great success. Over the years, it has collected countless prestigious awards from illustrious critics such as Robert Parker and Luca Maroni, confirming its undisputed prestige.
