Before 1950, vines were grown on a very large scale: 20,000 hectares, compared with less than 3,000 hectares today. Its climate and privileged slopes have favoured this crop since the beginning of our era. Columella, in his treatise on agronomy, ‘De re agricola’, states that the Romans found vines when they arrived in Allobrogia in 120 BC. Pliny and Celcio also spoke of ‘Vitis Allobrogica’.
Around the 5th century, ecclesiastical domains (bishoprics, abbeys, priories) appeared. By the 14th century, they belonged to the nobility and the bourgeoisie, before passing to the peasantry in the 19th century. The hillsides of Cevins and Saint Pierre de Soucy are typical of Savoie vineyards.
