Geschichte The variety is thought to have originated in Campania, but other researchers have suggested a Greek origin. Pallagrello Nero was once a favorite of Ferdinand IV, the Bourbon King of Naples and Sicily, who had the variety planted (along with its sibling Pallagrello Bianco) in his famed Vigna del Ventaglio, or Fan Vineyard. The phylloxera epidemic of the late 19th Century was thought to have sent Pallagrello Nero to extinction, but a local grape grower discovered the variety in the 1990s and replanted it, with a handful of other producers following suit.
Ampelographische Merkmale The bunch and the acorn are rather low in weight.
Sortencharakteristische Merkmale A medium alcoholic wine is obtained, with balanced acidity and broad taste, fairly tannic but not particularly suitable for long aging.
