Description
What kind of wine it is
Nino Negri Valtellina Superiore Grumello is a still red wine from Lombardy, an authentic expression of the Nebbiolo grape variety, locally known as Chiavennasca. To the eye, it displays a ruby red hue tending towards garnet, heralding a pronounced and ethereal aromatic profile. On the palate, it offers a dry, savoury and austere sip, balanced by remarkable elegance and good roundness. Tasting reveals velvety tannins perfectly integrated with toasted notes and hints of nutmeg, concluding in a persistent finish, the result of red wine vinification and ageing in wood.
Where it comes from
This wine originates from the Grumello subzone in Valtellina, north of Sondrio, in an area characterised by south-facing terraced slopes. The vines sink their roots into sandy loam soils rich in stones and clay components, situated between three hundred and four hundred and fifty metres above sea level. The area takes its name from the Latin term for a hillock, where the Nino Negri winery directly cultivates the historic crus Vigna Lunga, Sassorosso and Sassina.
How it is produced
The Nebbiolo grapes are meticulously hand-picked in October, sourced from vines trained using the Guyot and Valtellina arch systems. In the winery, vinification takes place as a red wine with careful temperature control, accompanied by post-fermentation macerations to complete the extraction of aromas. This is followed by two years of ageing, at least one of which is spent in French and Slavonian oak barrels. This process shapes a bouquet enriched with spices such as cloves, cinnamon and hints of red and black fruits. Ideally served between eighteen and twenty degrees, this red wine enhances roast meats, mature cheeses and lends itself to bold pairings with shellfish.
History and Curiosities
The Grumello Valtellina Superiore DOCG takes its name from the Latin term “grumus”, which refers to the picturesque terraced slopes north of Sondrio, dominated by the castle built in 1373. Since 1945, the historic winery Nino Negri has enhanced this exceptional terroir by directly cultivating prestigious crus such as Vigna Lunga, Sassorosso and Sassina.
