Description

The Bouzereau family has been growing vines in Meursault for nine generations, dating back to the 18th century. The current Château de Cîteaux was established by Philippe Bouzereau (senior) in the 1960s. His son Philippe (junior) took over the running of the estate in 2006, having completed his studies in Beaune and worked vintages in Beaujolais, Australia and New Zealand. The 18 hectares of vines are cultivated according to the principles of la ‘Lutte Raisonnée’ - sustainable farming. Philippe passionately believes in letting the wine express its terroir, through minimum intervention in the winery and a judicious use of oak. He has certainly achieved this, as the resulting wines are rich, concentrated and showcase the terroir beautifully.Meursault ‘Les Grands Charrons’ is sourced from a 0.95ha parcel with vines aged 35-60 years. Deep lay topped by stony surface soils. No chemical fertilisers or weed killers. As with work in the vineyard, so too is with work in the cellar meticulous: all treatments/actions are carried out only if absolutely necessary, with the aim as being as non-interventionist as possible. Throughout the vinification they practise simplicity, observation and vigilance, pneumatic pressing with fermentation using only natural yeasts and modest levels of new oak. All the wines are barrel fermented and aged for 12-18 months in 20% (avg) new oak casks in the cellars. Aged on fine lees with regular bâtonnage (where and when needed) using modest levels of new oak, 12 months in French oak (20% new), then transferred to stainless-steel tank.White peach, toasted hazelnut, and fresh butter, alongside delicate hints of vanilla bean, citrus zest, and flinty minerality. The palate is rich and creamy yet balanced by vibrant acidity and a textured mouthfeel. Flavours of apricot, almond, honeycomb, and a subtle smoky note.Biodynamic

From this winery
Located in an old Cistercian vineyard in the heart of Meursault, the Philippe Bouzereau estate has been working the vines for several generations. In addition to the family's historical know-how, we are now concerned with responsible viticulture, mindful of its impact on the environment. We are two brothers, Charles and Philippe, who are committed to cultivating the vines and expressing the unique terroirs of the Burgundy appellations. The vinifications also evolve to let each terroir express the typicity of its vintage. An immersion in the tasting of the greatest Burgundy terroirs, from Chassagne-Montrachet to Corton. Read more
