Description
What kind of wine it is
Matarocchio from Tenuta Guado al Tasso is a still red wine that expresses the pure essence of Cabernet Franc, originating from the Bolgheri Superiore area. Its complex aromatic profile reveals intense notes of Mediterranean scrub, plum, chilli chocolate and a hint of mint. On the palate, it is enveloping, supported by vibrant freshness and silky tannins. With its fine structure and persistent finish with hints of roasted coffee, it boasts remarkable ageing potential, making it suitable for a long period of cellaring.
Where it comes from
The grapes are grown in the Upper Maremma, within a plain surrounded by hills known as the Bolgheri amphitheatre. The area benefits from a mild maritime climate, where constant breezes moderate temperature fluctuations and ensure excellent sun exposure. The deep soils, with underground water reserves, support the vines and provide great balance. This synergy between soil and microclimate encourages a slow and regular phenolic ripening, giving the grapes a profile of rare elegance.
How it is produced
The process begins with a strictly manual harvest, followed by the selection of individual berries to preserve the integrity of the fruit. After gentle pressing and cold pre-maceration, alcoholic and malolactic fermentations take place in new French oak barrels. The wine matures in the same barrels for eighteen months, naturally integrating the contributions of the wood. The best batches are selected to create the final blend, which then rests for a further twelve months in the bottle to reach full expressive maturity.
History and Curiosities
The Bolgheri designation has a relatively short history, having been established in 1995, but it boasts an international reputation as a new benchmark in the global wine scene. Within this historical context, the Antinori family conceived this pure Cabernet Franc as the highest expression of a single vineyard plot, with the aim of preserving its integrity and most authentic expression.

The noble Della Gherardesca family began practicing viticulture in the late 1600’s on their land in Bolgheri, but things really began to change under the guidance of Guido Alberto Della Gherardesca (1780-1854). He was a passionate about viticulture. He was appointed majordomo of Grand Duke Leopold II and then dedicated himself to enology in his family’s land in Maremma. In the 1930’s, the property was inherited by Carlotta Della Gherardesca Antinori (Piero Antinori’s mother) and her sister who was married to Mario Incisa Della Rocchetta (who received the nearby Tenuta San Guido). The wine matured for 18 months in new French oak barriques; at the end of the ageing process, the best barriques were selected and blended, then the wine rested for 12 months in bottle before release. |
| Aging | The wine was then transferred to new French oak barriques, where it completed malolactic fermentation and matured for a further 18 months.
