Description

The vineyard that gives rise to this Chardonnay is located in an area shaped by the melting of glaciers, with debris carried downstream by the Meduna River. This process created a stony substrate rich in rocks, known as the “Magredi.” This unique soil composition has made Western Friuli the perfect place for viticulture. The stones impart minerality to the grapes and enhance temperature variation. The vineyard’s strategic location, at an altitude of 200 meters, contributes to the development of intriguing aromatic notes.

The name "Bosco del Merlo" is derived from local topographical maps which refer to the oak forests that once covered the area. The vineyards of Bosco del Merlo are situated between the ancient Roman consular roads of Via Annia and Via Postumia, dating back to the early centuries after Christ.

The Bosco del Merlo estate winery started up in 1977 in Annone Veneto, founded by siblings Carlo, Lucia and Roberto Paladin. Thanks to a profitable collaboration with the Istituto Sperimentale per la Viticoltura di Conegliano, a careful and modern zoning technique was immediately implemented in order to get the best out of the terroir, working the vineyard piece by piece. In the nineties, in the small town of Lison di Portogruaro, the cradle of viticulture in this wine-making region, a further 50 hectares of land was acquired, which therefore doubled capacity, increasing it to around 100 hectares in total.

Over the course of the years Bosco del Merlo has benefited from the advice of famous oenologists and experts from the Faculties of Oenology and Agriculture in Padua and Milan, such as Franco Bernabei and Leonardo Valenti, in its quest to find the most forward-thinking solutions for achieving optimal quality with the lowest environmental impact.

Story The name Bricola refers to the traditional wooden structure made of three or more poles bound together and planted in the waters of the Venetian and Friulian lagoon. It has long been used by sailors as a guide through the waterways, marking the route for those arriving from the sea into the lagoon. A true point of reference, it signals the way back to port for fishing boats returning home.
Climate The vines benefit from significant temperature variations, which enhance the wine’s aromatic complexity and impart a pronounced minerality.
Soil composition Rooted in stony soil at the foothills of the Dolomites.
Cultivation system Double-arched
Plants per hectare 5,000
Harvest The grapes are harvested during the coolest hours of the day through nighttime harvesting at perfect ripeness.
Wine making The must, obtained from a gentle pressing of the grapes, is cooled and kept at a low temperature, allowing for static decantation. Once purified of impurities, the must undergoes alcoholic fermentation in stainless steel tanks at a controlled temperature of 18°C.
Aging The resulting wine is aged on its lees, during which it develops greater aromatic complexity, enhancing its balance, smoothness, and structure to the fullest.
