Geschichte |
The vine Vernaccia di San Gimignano has been present in Tuscany since ancient times. Its origins remain unknown, though some think it is native to the current growing area, namely the province of Siena. In fact, since 1276 it has been mentioned in the municipal archives of S. Gimignano, and the wine of the same name was used for the Commerce also from family patrizie like that of doctors. His name, like the other Vernacci, could come from Latin "ver", Spring, or "vitis vernacula", or "home", as reported by Lucio Giunio Moderato Columella in his work "De re rustica". According to others, the term could be derived more recently and was traced back to the French-born Grenache vine or its Catalan Garnacha synonym. The Vernaccia di San Gimignano shares its name with Vernaccia di Oristano, but the two varieties are absolutely distinct from the ampelographic point of view. |
