Umbria has had since the times of the Etruscans a great vocation for viticulture, thanks to the favorable climate, the valleys sheltered by the mountain ranges and a rainfall well distributed throughout the year.
The production in 2009 was about 987.000 hl of wine, above all white, starting from trebbiano tuscan, grechetto, malvasia long white, verdello, as well as some international, among which the chardonnay, with excellent results.
Once linked only to the famous Orvieto, a DOC shared with Lazio, in recent years Umbria has taken important successes with two recognized DOCG red wines, the Torgiano Rosso Riserva and the Sagrantino di Montefalco. The first is obtained mainly from Sangiovese, the second from the Sagrantino autochthonous, which has its most emblematic feature in tannins. The Sagrantino di Montefalco is also produced in the Passito version, a dessert wine of great personality and with a great potential yet to be expressed. Other vines grown in this region, which are improving the average quality level, are the Montepulciano, cherry, barbera, merlot, gamay and alicante.

Information about Umbria

Region Umbria
Country Italy
Morphology of the land Plain: 0%   Hill: 71%   Mountain: 29%
Climate and soil The Region being closed up by the mountain ranges does not benefit from the influence of the sea. The climate is continental with cold winters and hot summers. Precipitation is abundant especially near the Apennine chains. Often in the hollows and in the smaller flat stretches, in summer there is no wind and the air is sultry. In general, Umbria enjoys an excellent climate due to the rich vegetation. Umbria is the only Italian region entirely inter-linked. It is predominantly hilly, even the most hilly in Italy.
History Originally in this region lived two ancient Italic peoples: the Umbrians and the Etruscans. At the Roman age of Emperor Augustus, who determined the boundaries, this region extended to the Adriatic coast of the Marches and to the west left the area of Lake Trasimeno to Etruria. After the fall of the Roman Empire, the Region was divided between the Lombards and the Byzantines. Over time these areas were always divided into many small states, among which the Lordships of the Monferrato and the Malatesta became very powerful.
Typical products Orvieto DOC, perhaps the best known of the wines of Umbria, is a fresh and clean white with a pleasant note of minerals and fresh almonds. Traditionally, it also exists in two other versions: sweetish or lovable, but now it is produced almost exclusively in the dry version. The vines used are Trebbiano, Verdello, Grechetto, Malvasia and others that grow on the hills around the beautiful city of Orvieto. Montefalco Sagrantino is a hot red wine, full, rich and spicy, produced exclusively with Sagrantino grapes, both in the dry version and in the amiable one. In 1992 he was entitled to the DOCG designation.
Typical dishes One of the products of excellence is extra virgin olive oil, a product of excellent quality, especially the DOP Umbria, which must include the sub-areas of the Colline del Trasimeno, Colli Assisi-Spoleto, Colli Martani, Colli Orvietani and Colli Armerini. Other products of this territory derive from the breeding and slaughtering of pigs, with Norcia the capital of the production of hams, cups, suppressed, sausages and all kinds of sausages. Truffles are also highly prized, collected in Valnerina, in Norcia and near Spoleto, in addition to the white ones of the upper Tiberina valley. Among the desserts there is the rock of Assisi, the cake of Orvieto similar to the panettone, with candied fruit, eggs and raisins, the attorta, that is a twisted cake of puff pastry with toasted almonds and minced. Perugia is the city of chocolate.
