Description
What kind of wine it is
Kurtatsch Kerner is a still white wine with a clear and vibrant character, an authentic expression of South Tyrol. This wine is made from Kerner grapes, a variety that develops an intense and defined aromatic profile in this environment. On the nose, it opens with floral and fruity aromas, highlighted by notes of yellow peach and lilac. On the palate, it stands out for its distinct mineral imprint, supported by a solid acidic structure that leads the sip towards a persistent and juicy finish. Its natural freshness makes it ideal for pairing with fish dishes and cheese selections.
Where it comes from
This wine originates among the peaks of South Tyrol, from vineyards located at 800 metres altitude with an eastern exposure. The high altitude ensures gradual ripening, preserving the aromatic integrity of the grapes. The vines sink their roots into sandy and clay soils, characterised by a rich presence of quartz and dolomite, minerals that impart a vibrant gustatory tension. Production is overseen by Kurtatsch, a company that brings together numerous local families in environmentally respectful viticulture, focused on enhancing individual mountain plots.
How it is produced
The winemaking process is designed to enhance the expressive purity of the fruit. It begins with temperature-controlled fermentation in stainless steel, a key technique for preserving delicate primary aromas. This is followed by a prolonged ageing on fine lees, which gives roundness, balance and depth to the lively acidity. The wine is distinguished by its well-balanced acidity and low residual sugar, resulting in a consistently dynamic sip. A serving temperature between 10 and 12 degrees is recommended to fully appreciate its essence.
History and Curiosities
Founded in 1900, Cantina Kurtatsch is a historic cooperative that brings together 190 families dedicated to sustainable viticulture. Kerner, a cross between Schiava and Riesling renowned for its frost resistance, finds its ideal vocation at high altitude. The vineyards, located at 800 metres above sea level and facing east on sandy and clay soils rich in quartz, produce grapes with a distinctive character. The careful selection of plots in traditional farmsteads and meticulous artisanal work enhance the purity of this Alto Adige DOC.
