Description
What kind of wine it is
Villa Russiz Collio Pinot Grigio is a still white wine with an elegant profile. Made from Pinot Grigio grapes, it displays a bright straw yellow colour. On the nose, it offers a fruity and complex bouquet, with clear notes of peach, pear and wildflowers. On the palate, it delivers a fresh and savoury sip, with excellent balance and a clean finish, ideal for accompanying seafood starters and light first courses.
Where it comes from
The wine originates from the hills of Collio, in the Capriva del Friuli area. The vineyards, facing south, east and west, benefit from a climate influenced by the winds of the Julian Alps and Adriatic breezes. The calcareous and clay soils, rich in marl and stones, give the wine a distinct mineral identity. The vines are cultivated using Guyot and double cordon systems by Villa Russiz, an estate dedicated to this region since 1868.
How it is produced
Production begins with the manual harvesting of the grapes in the coolest hours of the morning. In the winery, a gentle pressing of whole bunches is carried out to extract only the free-run must. After an initial racking, fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks at a controlled temperature to preserve the aromatic integrity. The wine then matures through ageing on fine lees for at least eight months, always in steel, gaining depth and structure before final bottling.
History and Curiosities
Founded in 1868 by Théodore de la Tour, Villa Russiz combines an excellent winemaking tradition with a profound spirit of solidarity, born from the donation of the estate for the establishment of an orphanage. This noble mission lives on in the esteemed Collio Pinot Grigio, the result of meticulous viticulture on the renowned slopes of Capriva del Friuli. Produced under the expert guidance of oenologist Gianni Menotti and matured in evocative underground cellars, this 2023 vintage wine reaches heights of absolute quality, recognised with the prestigious 2 Bicchieri Gambero Rosso award.

Théodore de La Tour was the first to understand the essence that made Collio wines great worldwide. Here, the extraordinary microclimate can offer the maximum benefits in the encounter between the cool winds of the Julian Alps and the sea breezes of the nearby Adriatic, and both softened in the perfectly exposed hills of Capriva del Friuli.
Therefore, this gave rise to what is still today the fundamental basis of Villa Russiz: new varieties best suited to the territory and capable of developing quality at the highest levels, a marvellous cellar with large vaults that is entirely underground, and a passion and constant commitment to attention to detail from the vineyard, to the wine factory, to the bottle.
Villa Russiz was and still is a symbol of generosity and sentiment. The sentiment of Elvine Ritter who, after the death of her husband in 1894, continued the count's commitment until she was overwhelmed by the events of the First World War and decided to leave the estate. Later, the generosity of the noblewoman Adele Cerruti took the form of vital help and support for children, which continues to this day, with the configuration of Villa Russiz into a non-profit organisation. The meticulous passion for viticulture is more alive today than ever at Villa Russiz, in the 94 hectares that make up the estate, 30 of which are given over to vineyards, with particular attention to keeping the number of vines per hectare between 4,500 and 7,000, thus guaranteeing grapes of great concentration. The wines of Villa Russiz are all part of the Collio DOCG, as are the three crus: Sauvignon de La Tour, Graf de La Tour and Grafin de La Tour. These three crus are the company's flagship for a modern quest for maximum quality, a coherent path of development and for creating great wines of international standing. Read more
